Is the ALOX coating on Swiss Army Knives the same thing as anodizing?

Thanks
Tom

I may be way off the base, but my understanding has been that anodizing process requires placing metal into electrolyte and applying voltage to the piece being anodized, whereas the alox coating is applied to the surface like regular paint.

It is an abbreviation of ALuminum OXide, though I don't know if this is the basis of Victorinox's use of the word.

it isent an regular paint. i study that now how for make my own splash.

its more like an hard coat, surface tempered thing. the aluminium parts get cleaned, acid bath for open the pores so the color can go deeper inside the aluminium, not only on the verry surface, make it more wear resistant. then it gets sealed thats an process where the with color filled pores get closed again, holding the color better and also make the surface tougher.

the thickness of that described tell if its ha2 or ha3 anodised, witch is better but not possible with all colors.

the wenger and vic alox are all anodised, either clear coat (silver) or colors like red, black and blue etc.

also older sak, say red military alox from the 1960ties and also some older civillian silver alox i have are less scratch resistant than the current ones, they have improoved the quality in the years.

hope that helps.
