ALOX: Tools thicker than on the plastic models?

I read in an ancient thread here that I didn't want to bring back up after 4+ years, but it has me asking... In the thread a couple posters commented that the ALOX models have thicker tools than the plastic scaled models. I wasn't aware of this and I don't have anything here other than my ALOX Farmer and Pioneer to check for myself. Is this true? Is it because they're able to build them thicker due to the ALOX?

Thanks! I sure have been loving the ALOX SAKs!

Yes the blade and tools are heavier/thicker.

I have a pic but I can't get photobucket to work today.....

Got it

Ah wow thanks for the quick response. I do like the beefier stock of the ALOX. The Pioneer and even the Farmer are still plenty slim for all the tools they pack in there. I don't like a really "fat" pocket knife, but in those two models in particular are just fine and I do like that they give slightly thicker tools.

I learned something yet again today - just like nearly EVERY DAY - on this website... :)

That does seem a little odd. Is it possible the blade on that the blades were just thinned over time and the picture above has two knives from different eras?

After lunch, I'll look at various ALOX vintages... I had read that the newer ALOX blades were a "touch" slimmer (but by no means anemic....). Someone needs to mic them to be sure.

In my pic, the Pioneer was produced between '86 and '99 and the Outdoorsman was post '91.

A few quick measurements of my alox pioneer and deluxe tinker. Both purchased new in the last decade.

the cadet uses the smaller cellidor sized blade
i dont know why, but it does

it appears (To my knowledge) to be the exception to this rule

If I'm not mistaken, the tool dimensions on the 93mm alox knives were to fulfill the previous military contract so they are thicker. The 84mm Alox knives were never issued so I expect VIC just used the 84mm implements they already had available.

Al,

That Sturdy Boy looks like a Pioneer. What's the difference, do you know? Any idea what years the Sturdy Boy was in production?

It was just what the Pioneer (Pioneer Sturdy Boy) was named early on. ALOX Pioneers have been produced 1957-present. As far as I know it's just the name on the box that's different...they, of course, have the highly coveted brass liners of the pre '84 (approx) knives. I have seen research that suggests the Sturdy Boy name was still used up until the mid to late 70's...
