In one thread somebody said that Victorinox is phasing out their alox handled knives.

Does anybody know about this? Any information, confirming or disproving that change, would be welcome.

Apparently only three models are currently being made: the Cadet, Farmer, and Pioneer. Don't forget about the Wenger SI though.

They might phase them out. I can honestly say that I've never seen an alox knife outside of the internet or a real knife shop. Many people don't even know they exist because they don't look like the normal red plastic handle SAKs. The only people that buy them are collectors, accumulators, and outdoorsmen (BCUSA has an obsession with the Farmer). Compared to the classics, tinkers, and spartans: the Alox has a very small crowd of buyers

I think it's sad because the Soldier used to be the Swiss Army Knife. Now it was replaced with a serrated breadcutter...

This forum causes me so much trouble. I read this and immediately bought an alox electrician I had been watching...
Thanks guys :-)

All you say is sad but true. Sometimes when I take out my Wenger SI to do something, people will ask what is that? I tell them it's a Swiss Army knife, and I get this blank look. Then they drop a comment "Oh, I thought Swiss Army knives had a red plastic handle with a cross on it."

Better stock up on the alox now while you can still get a back up.

'Serrated bread cutter' I love it man. Great description. I'll have to remember that one!:D

There has been no official word on whether they are killing the entire alox line, but expect to find out within a year or two I'm guessing.

If they do kill it all together I'll be making my own alox scales from hard 6061 aluminum with hard colored anodize, and putting them on 91m SAKS removing the awful plastic on those, and upgrading the liners to brass or titanium. Id rather they just keep making them though as I like the 93mm alox frame quite alot, and I enjoy modding them.

Haven't heard or read yet about phasing out the alox line, hope they don't.

I bought my alox Soldier 2002 in a real camping shop here in the Netherlands and seen some alox in other shops too. Also, Victorinox supplied alox Soldiers and Pioneers for a number of years to our military, which can be found in dump stores. But, the alox line isn't well known here either. The majority are the models with cellidor scales.

Maybe MacGyver should have used an alox SAK more often.

I like the alox ones alot but dont own any cause I like the SAK's with toothpick and tweezers. If they only made an alox with those included! :D

This is too bad. I bought my second alox Soldier at Target when they used to carry them, and until maybe a couple years ago they were still carring alox Cadets in different colors, especially green. Not only do I like the toughness better, but I like the way they have a balanced shape to them.

If they do phase them out completely, I wish Victorinox would go back to the harder, tougher plastic scales they had on (at least some of) their knives 30+ years ago. I still have an old Spartan that had been dropped a few times on cement and only has a slight crack in one scale, and never seemed like it could pop off. Maybe I'm imagining the difference, or maybe it feels different because it had no tweezers/toothpick, so therefore no hollowed-out spaces for those.

The only models that I prefer in plastic are the smaller models, like the Classic and the slightly larger Executive.

Strange. Here (Germany) are the alox versions sold in hardware stores and whatever (hunting and weapon stores). I bought my Farmer and Soldier in hardware store not a half mile ago. They are still there - I was there last week, getting some sandpaper and new working gloves. I didn´t buy one, because I already have those I want to have.

But if they will really sell it out, I gonna head there up and get some.

Kind regards

Wish they'd make another run of colored Farmers, have a black Pioneer and Orange Cadet, would love a blue Farmer.

(also, don't forget about Alox Classic)

I agree, it would be a shame if they phase them out. I only recently discovered the Alox line and I am very impressed with the quality and utility of them. To me I always viewed the plastic Vics as a sort of novelty however, the Alox are the real deal.

Sounds like baseless rumor, so far. Any definitive supporting info on a phaseout?

All I know for sure is that they are not investing effort into even making new press dies when the old ones wear out. Example the soldier shield scale one was done, and they didnt want to bother making another. The other thing is that there used to be 20 plus alox models for sale, now there are 3. Hopefully they keep those around at least, but they wont be putting out new alox models, only scale color variants.

I'm sure glad I stocked up on Pioneer Settlers and Soldiers while the getting was good - might need to start thinking soon about adding extras of a couple other models to the stash...;)

Good move, the pioneer settler is one f the nicest pocket knives on the market. Or was. You may want to pick up a spare Wenger SI if you don't already have one.

To be clear on what has been killed.. here is a discontinued list of alox.

Man, that's just plain sad!:(

I'd rather have seen them drop most of their 91mm cellidor line. If you want tweezers and toothpick, hang a classic on your keyring. If the world goes to hell in a hand basket, it's gonna be made out of plastic!
