Hi Chuck,

I've been carrying an Folding Alpha, #279 with the Rubber Grips and 420HC steel, for about a year now with nary a problem. I use it at work daily, as well as in the field when I go hiking or hawk-watching. I love the solidness of the knife - reminds me of a good 110 - and the one-hand open/close is so convenient...

I just today received a Alpha #277 with the Rosewood grips and ATS-34 steel. I anxious to see how well the edge holds up compared to the 279. - I think you'll be happy with either model!

I asked about this knife a few months ago in this forum.

This was my response when I got the knife:"I got my Alpha lockback today. It is a wonderful knife. A very thick handle, lots of good detail work. Nice movement in the blade when it swings open and the ATS-34 blade is quite nice. I see what people are talking about with the linerlock, with such a massive knife the lock looks quite small. This will be one of my best knives and I have quite a few.
 "

My impressions now are, it is still a big wide handle, the ATS-34 is wonderful steel, cuts well, sharpens easily. The movement of the blade is still great. The liner lock works well. (Note: The rubber handle Alpha Hunter has 420HC steel and the wood handle Alpha Hunter has ATS-34 steel.)

I never paid much attention to this knife, but now that I take a closer look, it appears to also serve as a very classy EDC knife, and a good value, too. What kind of sheath does it come with?

My Rosewood Alpha Hunter came with a brown or maybe you can call it red leather sheath that can fit on a belt sideways or up and down. It has a neat little cut on one side of the sheath so that the handle with the lanyard hole can fit and any line you may attach will be exposed, neat.

I also noticed that Buck also makes a walnut wood sides, grips or scales and that has 420HC steel. So I guess only the rosewood comes with ATS-34 and the walnut and rubber Alpha Hunters come with 420HC steel. My mistake.

The 277 (Rosewood w/ATS-34) comes with the leather sheath as described above. The 279BK (Rubber w/420HC) and the 279WA (Walnut w/420HC) both come with a black nylon sheath that mounts either vertically or horizontally on your belt. No cut out for the lanyard though... but a lanyard does hang out the side of the sheath very nicely :D

I originally posted in peter78's thread back in March and my good feeling for the Buck Rosewood Alpha Hunter has increased to GREAT in these past few months. Just seems to get better with age!:D Still great 'snap' when it opens and very smooth action. If I purchased it for the price peter78 paid for it, I would have gotten 2!:D Good luck!

This one is definitely a keeper! I like its design, the handle and its overall look. :)
