Already have a BK14; do I need an 11?

Hey Beckerheads, I have a question: My BK14 was one of the first real knife-y knives I ever bought and I love it to death. I've made countless custom scales for it, beaten it up camping, learned how to sharpen on an Arkansas stone with it, etc. It's my baby.

But lately I've gotten it into my thick skull that it would be kinda cool to have a bottle opener on my knife, so I've been eyeing the BK11. Possibly it's because I've spent too much time looking admiringly at the DPx HEST 2.0. Stupid reason to want to get a whole new knife that's practically the same as the BK14 I already have... but something tells me it's not the stupidest reason anyone's ever bought a knife.

Anyway, either talk me off the ledge or tell me to jump.

Don't just jump, get a running leap! Trust me that 11 is a completely different feeling knife in hand. It's one of the nicest 3 finger blades you can imagine and that makes it feel so fast in the hand. Add to that its got a bottle opener and it's even more special.

And because no thread is satiated without pictures...

I bought an 11...and I have absolutely no use for a bottle opener.
Translation: of course you need one.

Disclaimer: I had to take a Dremel to mine because I didn't like the way it sat in my hand...but I haven't seen other people complaining about that. It was a simple fix, too - even I managed to do it without screwing it up. Before:

Those are mighty fine lookin'. Dexwithers, I like the patina you put on those three. Mustard?

What kind of question is that?

Of course you need an 11, even if you've got a 14.

I have a differing opinion that many may disagree with:

The bottle opener on the end of the 11 digs into my hand when fully griped and after using it for more then 5min becomes kind of uncomfortable. If it wasn't for that I would recommend it more often but I really perfer the 14/24 design. I have seen people mod handles to close up the end of the knife and while never handleing one I imagine it solves this problem. Personally I have no use for the bottle opener either because I only drink canned beverages :D.

I agree with eero i like the 14/24 better.by the way i open my bottles with the spine of any and evry knives i own....but that s just me

Of course!
Especially if you're going to mod it...

Actually, it was the first skeletonized-handle knife I used that I felt didn't NEED scales. For slicing and light cutting, it's a joy to use right out of the box. But I still prefer it with 'em.

(without mods, but with scales, I prefer the 24 - but I wanted the bottle opener for BBQs and campfires.)

For those asking they are the BK11CSM. Discontinued By Kabar. Its Carbon San Mai. Carbon Steel Core of Hitachi White Steel sandwiched between 2 layers of 410 stainless steel.

I EDC my 11s.. great little knives. I have the same scales now on my Camillus sabre grind 11 but the CSM sure is nice.

Buy it,

You'll eventually need one of every Becker. Welcome to the addiction!

Dex has spoken of his San Mai blades before - didn't know he had 3!

Haha... I am very fortunate to have acquired 3 of them for sure.

They usually pop up every 4 to 6 months on the exchange or that auction site, so if any one wants one just keep an eye out.

B.Mauser is exactly right. Thanks man for explaining! I was driving and couldn't respond from my phone.

Now as far as the 11 is concerned........... It fits my hand perfectly. I have scales on my EDC 11 and it changes the feel completely.
I use the 11 back end bottle opener every time I have a beverage in a bottle. It does not dig into my hand at all. Well It's not uncomfortable for me. Maybe cause I've used it for a couple years now and have built up a tolerance. I tried it in my right hand (I'm left-handed) and I can see where some may feel a little discomfort.

It is a great knife. It's in my top 3 for sure. As in if I could only keep 3 Becker's, I would keep the BK-11, BK-12 and my BK-16.

Hmmm, based on the pictures above, I should have one 11 for every 14 I own - I am currently short two 11's...

That sounds like a real problem................ Better jump on Tomar's and order two right now! You should have them by the weekend! Problem solved..... Your Welcome. haha

I love my 14s and 24s. I bought the 11, well, because I am a Beckerhead and it can not be avoided. I ended up getting the micarta handles then gave it to my wife. It hangs at the entrance to the kitchen and the blade portion never gets used. The bottle opener on the other hand gets used more than I ever thought it would. On occassion my wife and I will have a Mexico Coke and those require an opener. My beer is usually in a can.
