I am in the market in the next month (due to a camping trip in the middle of nowhere) for a fixed blade. I would like opinions on what you have used, like and dislikes.

Here are my critiques:
*Needs to be full tang
*Would like it to be around 5-6", however longer isnt really a problem, its more of a carry size thing
*Absolutely needs to be able to chop/baton
*Would like it to be carbon steel for durability, but stainless isnt out the the realm
*Would like it to come with a nice sheath system, preferably kydex because leather+rain=mold and rot, but also not a biggie, my local shop does kydex
*Handle material not a big deal, so long as its grippy when wet
*Blade coating doesnt make a difference to me
*under 200 bucks

I was thinking possibly kabar becker companion or becker 7"? Help?

Thanks
-Kirk

Recon Scout in SK-5, high-carbon steel, great Secure-Ex sheath, 7.5" blade, modified Bowie. Hard to beat for the money.

I think there are some Scrapyard blades floating around for about 150 bucks on some websites. I found a scrapper 5 for 130 dollars and it fits all your criteria.

If you don't mind buying from the secondary market, these are EXCELLENT knives.

Go with your gut feeling. I have the Becker BK2 Campanion and it is a tough, beefy, 1/4" thick beast with a very comfortable handle. It will take anything you dish out on it. The BK7 is also a good choice.

If you wanna spend money though, the RAT's including the Ontario RAT's are highly praised around here.

+1 on the Cold Steel Recon Scout. Fits all your criteria with 80-100 bucks left over for other goodies!

I have never used a RC-6, but I have used an Ontario TAK-1 and it has held up very well. I would suspect that the RC-6 woul hold up even better. It is two inches longer for chopability and batonability. It has a really nice coating (I can tell from my Izula). And the sheath is exactly what you want. On ebay they can be had for about 120 plus shipping. And dont forget about RAT Cutlery's unlimited lifetime warrantee.

+4 on RC6

I also like the Becker BK7, but not a big fan of its sheath.

On a side note, upchuck.. idk where you're seeing all the ontario rat praise, but the majority of things i've read compared to Rat Cutlery havent been very "praiseful".

Im looking into the becker or the rat I think. If i get the becker, ill just have custom kydex made at my local knife shop. Im not a fan of cold steel. They undoubtably have nice fixed blades according to a lot of people, but the designs just dont appeal to me. I had a Fehrman knife last year, but sold it. I kind of hate myself for it now.

My first choice to meet your criteria is the Fallkniven A1. My second choice is a Becker C/U 7, but I prefer the BK-9 over the C/U-7.

If you still have time, check with some of the fine Makers on this Forum to see what they might have ready to go.

Off the top of my head........

Cold Steel SRK (Carbon-V steel preferably)
Kabar/Becker BK7 (you can get Micarta handles from Kabar)
Bark River has many knives that'll fit the bill.....

When I don't feel like carrying the Randall, I usually go with a Ka-Bar 1217 (the USMC knife). Not a thing wrong with it, and you can't beat the price.
