OK, so I finally got around to buying a Busse - a SAR-4 SE which looks great in the photos...here's hoping it's good in hand also.

While I'm waiting for it to arrive, I thought I'd learn some more from those of you more experienced. Here's my question: could I use this knife to chop through the bottom jaw of a wild Boar in oder to retrieve tusks, or is this asking too much of any knife? I realise some of you are pretty defensive of the 'ole hog, but I hunt them (does that make me like a Busse antichrist?:D).

My preference is to use a saw for this job, but what if (as has been the case before) I don't have one at hand? Last time I put some massive chips in a Fallkniven and rendered it pretty much useless (ended up looking like a serrated blade!) and I won't risk that again with a very expensive knife...if it can't take it. But I see and hear these pictures of abusing concrete blocks, steel poles etc. and can't help but wonder - can INFI take it?? These Boars are pretty tough...

I believe I recall a video of a guy chopping through a leg bone of some larger animal. Lets put it this way, I have personally validated the toughness of INFI by attempting to recreate the cinder block in a wheelbarrow vid.

The damage to my Skinny ASH was minimal on the edge. A couple of minute chips you could barely see or feel, and one that was less than 1/8" long and 1/16" deep. Took me 20 minutes of sharpening to bring back a flawless edge.

Hell even if you managed to render serious damage to the knife, just send it back to Busse and they'll make it good as new!

INFI and Busse's have the very best waranty and customer service in the Biz.

If you want to chop the bottom jaw of a HOG I saw go for it.

But dont come here telling us about it without having pix!!:D

This I will say, You will be amazed at the toughness of INFI and after you chop the jaw off that HOG you will BELIEVE!!!!!

At the risk of stirring pots which should not be stirred. Visit Knifetests.com, watch the Chris Reeve tests, the Sog jungle bowie test, the Cold Steel SRK and Falkniven tests. Then go ahead and watch the FFBM destruction test. Lest you think that's just because of it's thickness, follow it up with the skinny ASH-1 test video. As far as personal experience, these are hands down THE toughest real knives out there. The worst my combat grade mistress has gotten was a barely noticable ding in the edge from hitting a buried stone full force while doing yardwork, it cut the stone in half :p Sure you could build a better prybar, but a better knife that can be used as one? No chance. In regards to the hog jaw, you won't break it, but teeth being extremely hard may put small dents/dull the edge a bit. I do have a feeling it may be a bit too light to actually "chop" through a jawbone with. Perhaps experienced hog hunters can comment, since it's not something I've ever done.

I havent killed a boar so I am not sure how thick they are, but deer are easy.

I would "HIGHLY" suggest battoning it through with a stick instead of chopping with it.

I have batoned through 50 gallon trash barrels with ease. I dont think the bone would be any harder, but dont sit there and bang on it like a set of drums.

Baton it through:thumbup:

Welcome to Bladeforums and the World of Busse! Bet you can't have just one. :D

Plenty of hog hunters here, so one should be along soon who has probably done it already.

We will want pics; and when you do, it is considered good form to warn about graphic pics in your thread title so folks know before they open it to see.

I can almost smell that boar roasting now... it's making me hungry!

Aint that the truth, I found about Busse a week ago and now have one in hand and 3 in the mail!!! Check out knifetests.com, see for yourself.

Deer ribcage is no challenge. Infi runs through it like a zipper.

Batoning through the jaw seems to be a good idea though... probably a bit more precise than chopping also. It shouldn't be a problem.

As to chipping out knives made from VG10 steel, it seems quite easy to do on anything hard. I took the tip off mine and several chips out due to hitting barnacles while chopping driftwood. The edge wasn't all that thin either.

They are great knives on wood but for anything tougher I will take my Busses!

IMHO the SAR4 will go through a jaw bone, but a Battle Mistress would do it easily!!!
Welcome to the INFI Madness!!

INFI is pretty amazing stuff. I do use my Busses as real tools but I tend to try to nurse my edge a little since I am not that great at sharpening. I chop like crazy and baton a lot but always make sure I am not hitting the soil/rocks when I follow through or finish a split. I could honestly get by with lesser knives/steel.

My buddy and teammate River 8 however uses his Heavy Heart FSH like the gorillas in the old Samsonite commercials and it just smiles back after YEARS of that kind of use. I know others here have put their Busses through even more than 8 has but it's amazing to see it in action and how much he enjoys using that HH. He had tried everything else and until he found Swamp Rat and then Busse had never been satisfied.

I just got back for the center of the earth where I single handedly killed a T-Rex with my Game Warden. Chopped him up and froze the steaks. Not problem at all!!!! :)

I think they are tough.

TAKE THAT YOU CRAPY COMPUTER!

Yes. The busse knives will make short work of anything. Just take a look at that deer. They stay sharp too.

When my final day stands before me I want God in my heart, my bible in my left and my busse in my right.

Oh, NO you didn't!!!

Now we have to start a "which Busse would God use" and "which Busse is worthy of the Lord" thread.

:D:D:D:D:D

(My vote is for a Battle Mistress of some sort, BTW) :D

in my experience the infi tends to roll rather than chip, which means the fixing is much easier.

I marked my convex edge on my SS by wacking a dried turkey leg bone (cooked for a long time). thee passes on a ceramic stick, and a few strops and good as new. I have hit rocks with my fbmle, and concrete table top with my Ash1cg, and had a bit of edge deformity. Not a bunch. I would be more concerned with the teeth, than the jaw bone. Enamel is very very hard stuff. I would bet you money if you are careful and actually place the edge then baton you will still have to do some sharpening on the edge to bring it back to tip top

I used an FFBM and chopped thru a dead, fallen, hardwood tree that was probably 3 1/2feet around with a tape and the edge looked perfect after it broke in two. No chips or rolls.
