Hey guys.

Any of you use something other than a regular custom stamp? I like the idea of something different, but haven't come up with anything.

Anyone make their own mark? I've got some stainless rod that I got to try making a simple geometric stamp with, but I'm considering trying to grind and file it into a mark.

If not, I'll just order a custom stamp.

Where do you recommend ordering one from? Do you feel that it's better to get one type over another (delrin, brass, steel)? For those with delrin, any longevity issues?

Thanks

I think it was Sandy Morrisey that mentioned filing one out of a large bolt head.
I've meant to, but never tried it.

It is more of a redneck solution than a professional means by far, but I have been "branding" my mark in the back of my sheaths with a wood burner.

Bob Loveless signed his sheaths with a Sharpie. I use steel stamps made by Infinity. I've got a couple in different sizes. They are REALLY spendy at $200 plus but it is one of those deals you will only ever buy once because it will last your lifetime. Unless, like I did, you change your name 25 years ago, so don't do that! My main stamp that I have used the most I have had for years and years and have used it on countless projects. Just as sharp and clean a stamp as ever. No experience with brass or the derlin stamps.

I have several thousand imprints using a clicker press on my latest set of delrin stamps, no longevity issues. Unless your a graphic artist, spend the money and have your logo designed for you right the first time. I don't have time to file on nuts and bolts all day to make a stamp that somebody else can do in 5 minutes and do it much better with a laser.

Right Skyler, but I'm not a leather bending maniac like you and some of the others. I just literally made one sheath over the course of two days. Working for the man sucks, but it does afford me time to luxuriate in the process. ;)

Thanks for the comment re: delrin. I'll likely just have one made.

My choice is brass made by Buckeye Engraving. Top Quality, sharp impressions and about $100.

Well, golly gee I didn't meant to offend.
Just offering up an idea since there are so many DIY types here.
If one was to use a bolt, a simple design (think cattle brand) would be the way to go.

Personally, I use a small screwdriver to make my "architect's handwriting" W
I sign all my work with that W… it's my mark...
But that's me :)

Do we have some tutorial on the forum about DIY making stamps. Its nice to hear you people that you can afford big bucks for stamps, but in my country thats not so easy. I already saw some tutorial on stamps on one forum in my country, but woukd like to see another opinion, before i try to make couple of mine

Wow Paul - I want to save that in my memory banks for later. I have a great magnesium stamp - but cannot for the life of me remember where I got it.

Macan,

I tell you what I would do. I would look at mold making videos on Youtube and pooring bronze or brass into it. I think if you were handy with a file, a chunk of wax, and a mold would make you a hell of a stamp.

There is a little tutorial on Leatherworker.net using bolts. With the massive pool of metal working knowledge here I'm sure we could do better.
