Altering a case xx

I was requested to cut the top guard off of an old Casexx Marine knife. The owner also wants some grooves cut in front of the guard. He wants the notches for a thumb grip.
I am obviously a novice in this area. So, I have questions.

1. Is it possible to do without heating the knife and retempering after the alterations?

2. If #1 is possible what should I use to do the work? A small grinder? Dremel?

Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Elmgrovegnome,

If you have Bill's attention, please listen to him. He does some outstanding work and would be invaluable for information.

Cheers.

Assuming it's similar to the current Case Marine, a hacksaw and file should be all you need if you can cut straight- I've taken the top guard off a short Ka-Bar that way.

As for the grooves, careful work with either a distributor points file or a bimetal hacksaw should do the job.

I am sorry I dont know how to post a picture. I am going to have to work on that one.

I also don't know why my friend wants to alter this knife. It is in very good condition and is, in my mind, a classic. I would keep it as a collectible and not use it, if it were mine.

The knife says USMC 1939 - USA. The blade is 7". The top edge is 3". There is a "Blood" groove in the knife. The handle seems to be leather. The end of the tang can be seen at the but of the knife. The Sheath says CaseXX U.S.M.C. and has an emblem. The stitching is in tact and other than normal wear the knife and sheath are in great shape.
