Hi,

I just got 500 surplus 8mm rounds from JGsales.com but just learned that pretty much all the rifle ranges in California no longer allow steel jacketed rounds, where do you guys go to shoot your CR rifles with this type of ammunition?

I just wont pay 28 dollars at Big 5 for twenty Remington 8mm hunting rounds...too expensive...

Thanks

Fortunately I moved out of Ca to avoid just these kind of troubles.
There may still be some acceptable desert lands administered by the BLM past Barstow, if they're not in the area included under the Desert Protection racket.

Steel core bullet were outlawed, but jacketed may still be OK. Better check with your local BLM office. Also, Thomas mountain in the San Bernardino national forest about Hemet Ca still allowed target practise last time I checked.

In short, check with Forest and BLM officials for guidelines to lands away from towns and cities. Make sure you really check into it, I know from experience low level officials sometimes say 'no' through ignorance or just plain spite.

Take a small box of approved rounds with you. Take the steel jacketed out of a duffle bag, and load them away from anybody who can see you. Shoot the bullets at the target. Who will know what is being fired. If somebody comes to take a look at your shit, show them the copper jackets as though thats what your shooting. Even play dumb and ask someones opinion of these rounds. That will put it in their mind that you have the right stuff.

thanks for all the replies... I will look into it.

Otherwise I''ll just have to get a .22 CZ rifle or find more affordable 8mm rounds.

Anybody know if any places around Vegas lets you shoot FMJ rounds?

We used to go to a dry river bed that had pretty steep walls. I completely understand your frustration: My rifle range doesn't allow FMJ. they do, however, sell HP at a high price. Safety or profit, I'm not sure why the rule exists, but if a 1x1 inch piece of cheap pine can seriously deflect a 308 slug at 3 yards from the back stop, maybe it isn't worth shooting them. I'm not sure I believe it.

a friend who also owns a Mauser explained that the ranges here dont allow it for safety and fire hazard reasons being that the steel rounds are too powerful and destructive towards targets, the risk of richochet, sparks (can cause a fire?), and that these rounds just stay lodged in the environment and dont disappear.

I've own my rifle for about a year now and havent ever taken it out, just locked up in my closet, taken out every once in a while for friends with the same interest, cleaned and put back waiting for the day...so I'm not really knowledgeable about the validity of these gun range rules...

Hi H2O Cutter,

thanks for the link!

I've gone to the Saugus range website before and on the ammo and supplies page, it lists that they too prohibit steel jacketed rounds....

But it looks like a fabulous place to go, and they rent too.

Hey christcl, do you have a lee loader?? you could pull the bullets and replace them with what is legal and what weight and contour that you want to hunt with for very little money. I like to practice with the rounds that I use for hunting, accuracy being the goal.

The other way to go is to find a farmer or property owner that would let you shoot what you want on thier place? Good luck and happy shooting.

Los Altos Rod and Gun Club, admittedly a bit out of your way, has only the following restrictions (from their website):

14. The following are NOT PERMITTED on this range: FULLY AUTOMATIC FIREARMS, ARMOR- PIERCING BULLETS, INCENDIARY BULLETS, TRACER BULLETS, TRIGGER ACTIVATORS, 50 CALIBER BMG AMMO, EXPLODING TARGETS, AND ANY FIREARM THAT DOES NOT COMPLY WITH STATE OR FEDERAL LAWS. All PISTOL-GRIP LONG GUNS may only be fired with butt plate against the shoulder (fixed stock and/or folding stock extended). IF NO SHOULDER STOCK, THE FIREARM IS NOT ALLOWED ON THIS RANGE.

I don't know if steel-jacketed counts as armor-piercing...

Great place to shoot, if you're ever up this way. I'm in Silicon Valley.

Los Altos looks like a great place to shoot, i'll drop by the next time I'm in the Bay Area. Thanks for the link.

I'm going to save all the reloadable cartridges...maybe I can find someone who can reload them at a cheaper price per round than Big 5.

In the meantime, I'll just get a .22 rifle as the main target shooting user and bring my Mauser as the extra special treat gun. More convenient and cheaper...plus the girls would prefer to shoot something that doesnt kick like a mule and sound like a thunderbolt. Just went to Turners today and they actually have the CZ 452 Military trainer .22 I've been eyeing.

thanks for all the input
