Alternate runs of CRKT Pilar (S35VN exclusive)

Hey all,

I, like many, am a fan of the CRKT Pilar because of its pleasing design (thanks to Jesper Voxnaes), but turned off by the 8Cr13MoV and heft of a full steel construction. I was somewhat interested in the Blade HQ exclusive version with 12C27 and a CF show side. However, I did not pick up one of them before they sold out.

Question 1: Does anyone know if CRKT/BHQ are planning another run of the 12C27 version?

The other (and more exciting) prospect is a further upgraded Pilar. I have heard rumors online (claiming to have reliable sources) that a new run of upgraded Pilar is in the works. The details are still mysterious, but the assumption is that it will be the answer to the frequent requests for much better materials.

Question 2: Does anyone know anything about this mysterious new version? If it is an exclusive offered by a certain dealer, I want to know about it in advance so I can get in line early.

Thanks for any input. Just trying to see if there is any possibility of getting an upgraded Pilar, or if I should go ahead and buy the standard version knowing that I'll be unenthusiastic about the materials.

I just bought the "poor man" original version. I like the all steel construction. Titanium scales and D2 steel would make it just about perfect but I don't mind it as is either.

ffs, I was trying to be more careful with my $... now this, I simply can't refuse s35vn and copper scales on this... geez
completely blowing the non-existent copper natrix off my list (which was already happening for other reasons), but this seals it

Wasn't there a CRKT exclusive made for KC (?) that turned out to not have the steel it was supposed to? Seems like I recall it wasn't even a stainless steel.

That was supposed to be a Hootenanny in S30V. Official statement from CRKT is that the manufacturer mixed up steels. KnifeCenter took care of everybody on that, though. Mistakes happen, and the good response to the mistakes made the companies look good as a result. I guess the OEM (which nobody strictly knows) looks bad, but can't really pin blame on an undefined entity.

It's still going to be poorly made and use Teflon washers. S35vn isn't going to make it a better knife. Crkt just done it to sell more of them based on the steel alone. Marketing trick. I guess not everyone cares about qc and fit and finish.

The steel is welcome change along with the g10 faux carbonfiber lolol. But as a knife nut I can't buy Teflon washers and shitty manufacturing and qc. For 65+usd there are far better knives from China that are far superior to anything crkt has. Civivi, real Steel, ruike, bestech, list goes on.

Nick talks alot about the issues in his reviews of the Pilar.

Crkt is the wrong brand for this awesome design. They just don't know how to do it for enthusiasts in the knife community.

Well if you are going to throw a fit like a child in the Pokémon cards section of a K-Mart...then why not buy the Pilar and put bronze washers on it?Good lord they're CHEAP to acquire.Quite frankly I'd like to see the Pilar in a 3" in edge format.

Even with the G-10/carbon fiber laminate strip...I don't get why people like carbon fiber.I'd rather see CRKT just use G-10 or Zytel with a similar fabric texture put on it like their Taiwan days..carbon fiber has almost no feel."Visual bling" appeal on knives like carbon fiber for looks very tacky to me like a knife painted gold. Why don't we start putting hologram stickers on the handles, wear gold shorts, hang these from our belts and make a home made music video of "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred.

I don't really find Nick Shabazz's viewpoint on knives to be a good one really.Nick's view is very parasitic in my opinion.People of his caliber could walk into a Dollar Tree and complain that they sell a generic version of furniture polish and not actual Pledge. The colors 'red and yellow' come to mind when I hear his perspective and that Woody Allen style voice(shudder).

In case you haven't noticed going this route to please the 'knife enthusiasts'...corners are going to be cut somewhere to compete at a 'general consumer' price point.CRKT doesn't want to be a 'hard to afford' brand.People are too distracted by things like ball bearing washers and carbon fiber (real or not) rather than more useful things like more jimping work...things that focus on improving the function on a knife.I'm seeing that quite a bit on the high end Chinese brands the enthusiasts are mysteriously swooning over.

You could throw in bronze washers. That's what I do to all of my cold steel folders. The thing is, though, that it's often hard to find the sizes you need for cheaper folders, and lots of OEMs using synthetic washers use very thick (.030" or so) washers to make up for poor tolerances in the pivots. Good luck finding one that thick, and stacking washers to get there usually leads to a bizarre action that is not smooth.

I can't speak for others, but I personally like CF because it's significantly stiffer than most composites used in this industry, with CF weave being a tiny bit stiffer than 6061 aluminum in the two in-plane orthogonal directions. For a frame lock, I think it's a good idea to have a stiffer composite oppose the very stiff steel or ti lock side.

As for Nick, I don't see his complaints as being uncalled for. He usually frames it in terms of value, and right now there's better built knives out there for the money, so his complaints stand.

Thanks. I thought I was imagining it. When dealing with a company like Knifecenter our money is pretty safe. It's been a while since CRKT has made one I wanted . If I paid for a premium steel I'd want to make sure someone tested it along the way though.

Completely disagree to Nick's views. In reality a several hundred dollar can be every bit as capable in disappointing as a $20 knife.

Yeah but as a composite Carbon Fiber can still flex without steel liners under it just like G-10 and Zytel. Some people may not like the 'thought' of injection molded Zytel scales.I'll tell you though buzz that fabric texture on it...much easier to take off your pocket than real G-10.Hard to ignore those old CRKT's like the Marzitelli Prowler and Crawford Falcon.

Thicker synthetic washers do lead to more durability. That's what the old USA made REKAT's used and I don't see people shying away from acquiring them.I'll give you a good example of 'washer dissapointment'...a $330 MF1 by Extrema Ratio.Thin nylon washers that looked semi deformed in assembly like a cheap $15 Smith & Wesson knife. The MF1 is an awesome knife...but disappointment obviously doesn't wear a dollar tag.
