Everyone knows anything about knives most have some sort of sheath or scabbard, and most will know the main materials; Nylon or canvas, Kydex or other hard plastic, leather or sometimes wood. My question is: What else is there? what are the alternate sheath materials that you use/want to use/heard of being used? Prototype pics welcome!

Lots of metal sheaths out there, most of a military application. Tons of wooden sheaths and scabbards. I have a couple of laminate sheaths, ie, fiberglass etc. One of mine from WW2 has cotton fibers in it so I figure an early micarta. One fellow recently made a carbon fiber sheath but I cant find the pics.

So yea, theres a lot of alternate materials out there, your only limited by your imagination and/or skills. :)

I recently found a need for a sheath for my becker BK-7 I was thinking that I could use a couple sheets of thin-ish aluminium and pancaking the blade with leather inserts to protect the edge and spine that are bolted and epoxied in, hows that for an idea.

I used PVC pipe for my fishing knifes.. Heat up appropriate size pvc in oven and put knife in soften pipe manipulate shape with gloved hand .Not pretty but works well

Ya I use chunks of PVC to shield the edge on my steel arrow heads

Yup, seen just that before, its looks pretty nifty if done with a little creativity. :) Bolt a belt loop to it and you might have a conversation piece.

I've seen some awesome sheaths made with cardboard and duct tape! It is indeed like the Force, it has a light side and a dark side and holds the universe together.

My daughter has a duct tape purse thats held up to months of use, she wants to make me a duct tape wallet. I'm holding my ground on the NO till she gets something besides flowers and neon. :p

I think I heard before that they take duct tape on space missions. I don't know if that's an urban myth or what. If the don't they should. :)

Yeah I've seen several sheaths made from PVC pipe you can get from your local hardware store. You can get a heat gun or oven and mold it just like kydex. If you look on YouTube you'll find lots of machete sheaths being made from PVC. I've thought about trying it for my machete. I though for a machete it might be worth using it as a liner instead of wood.

Duct tape is an admirable thing, I made a sheath for my KA-BAR Acheron out of an orange juice bottle, a little soda can aluminium (to keep the tip from going through) and some Gorilla Tape
