I have been trying some different materials in my area for bow and drill lately, I have had great success with sunflower stalk, mullen stalk, and now.......
YouTube - Alternative bow and drill material
And yes it really stinks up the house! Doesn't smell like the leaves and seed buds do, if your wondering.
This was to show that it will work, not meant for you to go searching for the material as I'm not 100% sure you would want to have it on hand!
Here in central Nebraska Hemp was grown during WWII for use in making ropes for Navy ships. As a result of that crop, it now grows wild in a lot of areas. Commonly called ditch weed, as that is where it can easily be found.
It is easily spread through out the countryside as animals such as doves love to eat the seeds. On almost any outdoor adventure in central Nebraska you will run across it. Some stalks can get between 3-4" thick. Which would make great hearth boards!
I may try to make an entire bow drill set from it in the future, as the cordage is very strong and should hold up well in bow and drill.
