Alternative carry for your Spydercos

As much as I love my Spydercos (I have about 25, including some rare ones 😊) I prefer to think of my knives as ā€œpackagesā€, meaning I take into consideration how they are carried and deployed and as such, sheaths are often a part of it.

Here are some of my favourite Spyderco ā€œpackagesā€ā€¦

Endura Wave with Merc Harness and Normark Tripwire….the Merc Harness is awesome for shoulder carry! The sheath is a bit stiff but the cord tripwire across the Wave opener works 100% of the time

The Ayoob is definitely in my top 3 Spydercos and the River City neck sheath makes it all the better. I can do the Spyderco drop right out of the sheath (though once I slipped and cut myself while showing it off…quite embarrassing lol). Unfortunately, it does not fit the new sprint run which is much thicker than the older model

The Civilian is another one of my favourites and I love the concept of the Extreme Edge Auto-Opener. Although their website says Ghost kydex is not the best option for the Auto-Opener series, I couldn’t resist.

As you can see, it will not fit with tip-down carry

Here it is with the clip removed before I re-installed it for tip up carry (it will fit that way)

It does take a bit of technique and I am not at 100% with it yet

Finally, a Hike Your Own Hike (HYOH) wrist strap. The Ayoob might be a bit big/heavy so I will have to experiment with some of the lighter models

What alternative carry are you running?

yeah i guess it is just you...i am more about protecting myself than assassinating others but as you say, whatever floats your boat

Interesting, looks like you put a lot of thought into it. And effort too.

I'm a retired LEO and when I'm in "protect myself mode", I carry a gun, a knife and a kubotan.

Actually, I always carry a knife (right pocket/strong side) and a kubotan (left pocket/weak side)

. . . but I only carry a gun when I really think I going somewhere that justifies it.

----------------------------

I'm "licensed" to carry a gun anywhere it's not otherwise prohibited under LEOSA in the 50 United States BUT being able to carry a gun isn't as great as all of those who want a CCW think it is. There's the liability (criminal & civil) and simply the inconvenience and weight of carrying the gun.

So, my preference is NOT to carry a gun unless I think it justifies the risks (legal and otherwise) and the inconvenience.

----------------------------

BTW, I "hate" neck knives and wouldn't ever consider carry a knife in a wrist band because it requires wearing a jacket or a very loose long sleeved sweat shirt which is too limiting IMO.

Situational awareness and a handgun is likely your best defensive option, if you aren't allowed to effectively defend yourself and won't relocate perhaps a walking stick of some sorts.

A good pair of running shoes would be preferential to getting in a knife fight.

A trapper in a belt sheath is my alternative knife carry choice, not too exotic I know. :)

Tried various neck knives from small fixed blades to Microtech UTX-70, hard to get to under a shirt and found them rather annoying.

i have sheaths for virtually every part of my body for other knives (heck i even have custom Emerson themed boots with Karambit holders that wave out on the draw) but i started this thread about Spyderco specifically because some types of carry that work with fixed blades wont work well with folders...just wanted to see what options are out there for Spyderco

Wildest I've gotten with a spyderco was putting a zip tie in a spydiehole to make a ghetto wave. Actually worked pretty well from a pocket.

ah yes the zip tie...you can actually get aftermarket wave openers that fit into the spyderco hole as well as karambit rings you can attach at the back end although i have not tried them

I love it, nice! Sometimes I carry my Ronin strapped on my sleeve like that if I am around my complex outside late at night, all my waved folders do just fine waving from my sweatpants, so no sheath needed. I do have a leather sheath like this for my PM2 and fancy XL Espada, but they are not for quick draws.

They work very well, have gimping, good for striking with the blade open or closed and it makes the draw very effortless.
I cannot imagine carrying the Ma2 without the ring, used to be a literal EDC for me, till I got a Police 4 at least. Still love it, just gave mine dark burgundy scales.

It is a wonderful thing to have that choice, though, as not all do.

I don't have an alternative to the Spyderco Gayle Bradley that I carry. But, I have a small Victorinox Swiss Army knife on my key chain that has some cool features that my GB doesn't. It has a scissors, a toothpick, a small knife blade, a tweezers, and a screwdriver. So far Spyderco hasn't replaced it. But for general cutting my GB is very hard to beat.

Very interesting. I live in Florida, where state law allows you to open carry almost any blade (local laws vary). I like neck knives because of easy access regardless of whether I'm wearing a jacket, sitting in a car with the seat belt fastened, and so on. A neck sheath for a Para 3 would be way cool.

I do not have any wave openers. I got an Emerson some years ago and it would not work with my shorts. I gave it to a friend who is into CQC and I have not bought another one since.

I just got a Spyderco Subway Bowie--excellent little knife but a terribly awkward sheath. I will need a custom sheath for the Subway.
