"Alternative" Folder Blade Styles?

I'm looking for some different blade designs, such as Cold Steel's Nogales Clip Point on the Vaquero Grand knife, or Karambits...basicly something that is a chance from the standard clip/spear point or tanto.

Functionality is important too...

Seams to me like Cold Steel ventures into the "alternative" style blades more on their fixed blades versus folders...Then again, not sure what I'd like to see, maybe a folder mini-bad axe?

Spyderco models you might like:
Civilian
Matriarch
SpyderHawk
Harpy
Merlin
Shabaria
Dodo
Chinook and Chinook II
Lil' Temperance (with upswept clip-point)

CRKT Lightfoot M1

Kershaw/Ken Onion Bump (might not be available yet but is coming out soon).

Happy hunting,
Allen.

Another vote for Spyderco. In the custom market, check out Laci Szabo's stuff. Bladeart carries some of his stuff, and it doesn't get much more "alternative" than this. He also has his own website somewhere.

Good call on Laci Szabo's work. Check out Szabo Inc.. Beautiful work, but a certain suspension of disbelief is needed with some of the more outrageous models! For example, I have the large balisong. Whatever else the picture says to you, factor in massively heavy and impossibly sharp. :D

For a few more interesting concepts, check outAncientSoul Knives also.

Chambers! How does that Rad work? I've been tempted a couple of times but I can't see how to grip the knife when it's folded, or where the cutting edge would be.

One of the knives allenC recommended is a favorite of mine, the Shabaria. If the Nogales clip points caught your eye, you'll recognize the utility of this blade form. The Spyderco version is more subtle than the Cold Steel -- but I also have the Vaquero Grande and El Lobo!

Bladetech makes some great folders. Their Tarani Karambit is an incredible piece of engineering and beauty. I also like their hunting folder and Mouse model.

My two cents,

Josh

My "Smith & Wesson" HRT(DR) has an "interesting" blade shape...Sort of a drop-point re-curve.

Opps...I just noticed that you were asking about folders. Sorry.

Esav you know better than to get me started on Szabo blades!

I would reccomend the RAD 100% it is one of my favorite of Lacis' designs. My biggest bitch with them is they're bloody expensive. Not even a new UUK is going for the rate the RADs are.
Price aside (should you be so lucky) The RAD carries well on the waist band as intended. The draw stroke works perfectly and the knife falls right into the reverse grip. You really have to feel it but it is a very secure grip. One of the strong points of this thing is the heft to the blade 7" and all. A solid flick of the wrist and this puppy SLAMS open. If you're not ready for that weight it'll fling itself right out of your hand to. A buddy of mine almost lost the RAD flicking the blade open like that.

If you're interested in the RAD check out Bladeart.com FIRST. They have three new variants of the RAD instock. The large 7" bladed one with G-10 (I think) scales that looks really sweet. And they have two smaller RADs in a 5" blade length, these have scales and bolsters on them and some file work and come in what appears to be a bead blast finish and a polished finish. I am very interested in these five inchers but as I mentioned earlier cost is a very real factor for me. I'm just not able to buy one right now.

Well since someone mentioned Ancient Soul, I may as well post a pic of my two Liong Mah designs :)

The Dreadnought (built by Larry Davidson)

and the Rogue (built by Jeff Hall)

If you are willing to go custom then the world is your oyster in terms of "different"...

RL, I always liked that Rogue. There's a lot of integrity in those very clean lines.

Chambers, there was a guy a while ago who couldn't give one away ... the killer price was still too high ... but someone finally had mercy on him and bought it. Should have been me. :(

You might look up friction folders. I have always found them appealing.
