Anyone use alternative ivory? Does it make a decent knife handle? I saw a knife for sale in this material and was wondering about it.
Thanks

I've used the stuff a fair amount, closest thing I've seen to the real McCoy. Handles made of it look great.
Even has the color variations of the real deal.
Ken.

Can anybody post photos using this? I was just asking about ivory looking materials used for handles in the Becker Forum.
Thanks.

Most knife suppliers sell it. Jantz, Texas Knife supply, etc.

The best type I have used is called "True Ivory" and really looks like ivory. Most all are acrylics, with various powders added to get the right look.

There used to be an alternate ivory made from bone meal and acrylic. It had a nice old antique look and was not as plastic looking as the plain acrylic stuff. I don't know who sells this now ( if at all).

Another alternate for the look of an old ivory handle is the "ancient" color of ivory micarta. It is a paper micarta that looks close to ivory. The plain white ivory micarta is OK, but I really like the "ancient" stuff.

Another good ivory "look" alternative is acrylic infused Holly. It must be processed with clean, virgin resin or it will darken. Done properly it has look of old ivory. Hard to find as most processors don't take the time to baby it along.

Masecraft sells fake ivory that is made of casein, I believe. It looks amazingly like real ivory.

The Masecraft stuff looks fantastic... unfortunately, it'll chip like crazy. I have a large block at home with a big chip off one end; short drop onto the concrete.

I only ever used it once... on this knife from a few years ago. I figured it would be protected under the resin-soaked cord wrap.

I know this thread is about an ivory alternative but have to say that is a great looking knife Erin.

I just ordered the stuff from Texas Knifemaker.
Seemed to look good and was more synthetic than the stuff that chips easy.
