I'm not a big fan of using all the gimmicks that come out with/for products. Who here uses alternative mounts for their sharpening systems or stones?

I have found using a small bench vise works perfectly for my lansky system. I can alter position other than horizontal. I also use a cut silicone pot holder under my waterstones to keep them from moving around.

What are your home spun solutions?

I think a lot of guys who use water stones sharpen at the kitchen sink. Last time I saw Murray Carter sharpening knives as usual, he was still using the sink bridge I made for him many years ago.

Just cut a 1x6 the length of the sink opening, then cut one about 3" longer. Put the shorter 1x6 on top, leaving 1 1/2" on each end, and screw them together.

Put the stone on a damp washcloth, and it stays put.

The bridge can run front to back or side to side, depending on your style.

You can soak, clean or lap stones right there, so set up time and clean up time are minimized.

I have made this for sharpening my knives .I can choose any angle I want . In the picture are missing a piece of glass , sandpaper and waterstone I use ....here I make first primary grind to mark centerline on anealed 52100 .......And to be honest , I tried lansky , edge pro and I did not like it for two reasons: They are did not stable and have a short stroke .....
