I need to reprofile my knives as the bevels are off from the factory. I've been using them for a long time too and they just need a good rework.

Is there an alternative to buying the more expensive diamond rods for reprofiling ?

I was thinking about buying an 4" extra course dmt whetstone and just laying it up against the rods I have. Would this work well, or not? The dmt stone is only 20 bucks on anazon vs 50 for the spydercos.

Yea, that looks good. What kind of stones are those? They look to be about the perfect length.

I might try the sandpaper too. They would be the most economical. I never thought of that.

That whole dmt aligner kit is pretty reasonable too. 55-60 bucks.

Congress Tools makes stones that come is all sizes and grits, even triangle ones that will fit the Sharpmaker or smaller flat ones that you can attach to the current rods simiilar to what is shown above. I bought just the rectangle ones in like a 220/320 grit and just hold them at the top with one hand while I sharpen with the other or use rubberbands at top and bottom to hold in place.

Harbor freight has those three diamond sets for 12$. That's what I use on my SM too. Works better that spyderco rods and you have fine grit before the ceramics.

Sir Mike, Which size Congress Tool rods fits the SM .5 x .5 x 6 in. ?

Congress Tools' Moldmaster line comes in .5" x 6" triangular rods that fit the Sharpmaker.

I've used these Moldmaster rods with varying degrees of success. I found the very coarse grits too 'crumbly'. For the price, they are well worth a try.

For alternatives to SM rods, I prefer using my DMT Aligner stones.
