Alternative to A.G. Russell Seamaster?

Hi!

This is my first post, and I'm hoping for some advice on choosing a quality folding knife.

I have cheap rigging knife, and although I like the design, I'm not happy with quality. The A.G. Russel Seamaster looks nice, but it's way too expensive.

I'm a seaman in the merchant marines and need a knife that I can depend on. It must have partially serrated blade, and it would be nice if it had a shackle opener/key and a marlin spike. Easy, one hand opening is a priority, like an "Axis lock", "Arc Lock" or "Blade Launcher"(I'm left-handed). And it shouldn´t cost more than $100.

Since I'd also like use as an EDC, the blade must not be longer than 3 inches, and preferably sheep’s head style.

All suggestions will be appreciated!

Welcome to the Forums. Take a look at Myerchin. It sounds like you might like one of their knives. The Offshore Crew comes to mind. It has all the features you mentioned in the price range you are looking for. Good luck.

I saw a proto Spyderco Sailors knife at the 2005 Blade. Had the ball lock on the spike, can't remember what the blade lock was. Oh, man was it sweet! I'd be in for two. Someday, sadly someday....

Another option might be to look at one of the Spyderco Salt knives and ordering the marlin spike from Boye, if that's possible. It would be less costly than the Boye knife.

Thanks for your suggestions!

About the Myerchin I'm not att happy with fact that the edge of the blade rests against a pin. And at 9oz it's way too bulky to slip in to the pocket. I was thinking more in the lines of 3-4oz...

The Boye is too expensive at $130-150

I'm looking for handy, slim, folding, rigging knife, that easily slips into a pants or boiler suit pocket. Preferably with a proper one hand opening (Example: Benchmade Axis lock, Sog Arc Lock, or Leatherman Blade Launcher) suitable for a lefthanded person. And the blade must not be longer than 3 inches for legal reasons.

What about folding diving knives? If one forget about the marlinspike?

Please keep the suggestions coming!
If it were easy, I wouldn't ask for help...

The only other choices I see for you if you are willing to forget the rigging tool and the marlin spike are either the Spyderco Tasman Salt, or the Salt 1 in H1 steel.

I don't think anyone makes such a knife.

Just isn't a large enough market, IMO.

You might have to get something overseas. I remember seeing a lot of nice rigging knives in major European port city supply stores. But they were pricey then (over a decade ago), what they would be now, ...

I'm not a sailor, I tie decorative knots as a hobby. Here's some of my rigging knives and marlin spikes (and one old camper).

First picture after the camper they are:

Top center: British Army Knife, Joseph Rodgers, Sheffield, note that center liner extends as a flat screwdriver.

Top right: Camillus, USA.

Bottom left: Captain Currey, Sheffield.

Middle right: Ibberson, Sheffield.

Bottom right: Chinese cheapo, copy of British Army Knife.

Second picture shows three of the knives in open position, plus:

Top: a Spike made by tying a fancy knot on a pointy bolt.

Bottom: two Marlin Spikes with shackler slots, one adds a bottle opener.

My most used one is the Captain Currey, not the one with best quality but so flat and light, with the shackler slot in the spike, it has a plain edge which I prefer.

Sorry none is one hand opener.

Third picture just for show, some of my bell ropes and fobs.

Luis

(Edited for spelling of Captain Currey brand name)

Thanks for all suggestions!

I'm off to the high seas. I'll be back in late October.
