Well, I guess this pretty straight forward. I'm looking to find a more affordable (freeware?) alternative to MS Office. Primarily for basic word processing, and compataible with office formats. Yes, I can google this and I have a few websites I can surf, but I'm hoping to get some suggestions from first hand use, if possible.

Openoffice.org is very good, just make sure you save your documents in Microsoft compatible formats like .rtf or .xls if you want to open them on MS Office. I'm very happy with it for basic text editing and spreadsheet use, but I haven't tried it for anything too complex yet.

Open Office is excellent. www.openoffice.org

It has a more capable commercialized brother for sale known as Star Office. Google is giving away a current installation of Star Office in the google packs. pack.google.com Pick the software you want and it installs it.

You don't get an installable to save and work with and you get a googlepacks craplet that loads and keeps it updated. I turned it off in msconfig and use Star Office as loaded.

Google offers a free productivity suite as well through your web browser. Nothing loads to your computer and you must have an active internet connection to use it. docs.google.com
