Looking to get a crkt hisshou before I enlist so ill have it for deployment, plus I need a bit of time to save for it. At 6mm thick it sounds plenty durable for its intended purpose but I was wondering if there were any other alternatives in design to crkt's model. For instance the cold steel dragonfly o tanto, id prefer a guardless version for ease of carry. Anyone familiar with any other reasonably priced knives of this style? (Reasonably priced = < $350)

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "this style?" There are certainly other knives that share characteristics with the hisshou, but they may not be the characteristics that you were interested.
Also, you don't have to pay $350 for the hisshou. New Graham has it for $185 (1 in stock): http://newgraham.com/store/product/6846/Hisshou/
EBay has a few for not much more.

cold steel magnum tanto comes to mind, or check out the TOPS site in the 12" blade section.

The intended purpose, per James, is to "come into play when the operator's firearms cannot be used, as often happens in entry and search operations. It is designed for multiple carry options depending on the choice of the operator. The Hisshou demands respect, and is certainly not a sport or work knife, but it can truly be a lifesaver for the military professional. This is a knife that would have been carried by the Samurai."

It is a killing knife, plain and simple, and has been designed as such. Currently, in the production market with the features that this particular long knife has, there is nothing else available that comes close. I would respectfully submit that the other suggestions have been made by those that have no idea what they are talking about. Hesparus made a good post.

Also, Hanwei tanto's and waki's might fit your bill. It's really midway between a standard length tanto and waki. What are you planning on using it for? Are you sure you'll be allowed to carry it? Some units don't allow non-issued knives, for some reason.
