Alternatives to washers?

As you might know, I am currently striving to design a bali that can be a user and not depriciate.

First off, latches are the devil and they must go. A latch damages, at the very least, the other handle as well as the latch itself.

So that leaves only one area of friction, the area where the handles, pins, and blade meet. The handles scratch the tang and ricasso through regular use.

One possible solution is washers. Washers between the handles and the blade cause enough space so that the blade doesn't come into contact with the handles.

However, washers can cause the handles to loosen up quite a bit. I know my BM68 has gotten quite loose in just a few weeks. On knives like the 68 the pins are flush with the handles and tightening up the blade isn't an easy thing.

I've heard that most companies use washers simply to reduce the need for hand fitting of parts.

So what else is there? I dunno. Nothing? A scratched blade or a loose blade it seems.

I have an idea... I'm not sure if it will work though...

Say the blade is 3/16". First mill the handle slot at 3/16". Then mill the handle slot slightly larger, all except for the last 1/4" or so. So all the friction happens where the handles are 3/16" and the blade doesn't get touched where the handles are slightly larger.

Man that description sucked, hope the pic helps.

What do you think? Dumb idea?

Hello!

I've seen this design on balisongs from German maker Haller, have had two of them, didin't really help in avoiding scrathes and there was still blade play, but this might be due to lousy pins??
Good luck in this project

It just so happend that I was looking at one of my China cheepies last night and the handle on it was just like you described. I agree with Jonas, I don't think it will help much. The blade will still have an area in which to slip between the handles. If you do go that route don't forget to mill out enough to allow the wings to fit through the handle.

I re-pinned my Bear a couple of months ago and used four small pieces of plastic from the side of a 2 liter bottle for shims. The PET resin is VERY tough and has a low coefficent of friction. It is a low tech solution but it works well. (I don't beat the cheep Bear handles like Clay does so they last longer for me).

Yep, everyone I've talked to came to the same conclusion -- it probably wouldn't help the bldae from being scratched.

I'm going to say the hell with it and go with washers I think. The knife is going to have flush/hidden pins, thats non-negotiable, I just hope that it won't be loose all of the time.
