I am going to have the Boy Scouts in my troop make Altoid tin survival kits.
These will be taken on all hiking, camping, canoeing and backpacking trips.
What knife would you recommend and why? They all will have a SAK (or something equivalent) in their pocket. This would be in case their primary is lost or broken.
Thanks

Either the Buck 425 or Victorinox SAK Secretary. Slim, light, and great blades that will really perform when the chips are down. An added bonus - they won't break Mom - n - Dad's already tight budget.

I have a SAK classic in mine: inexpensive, small but useful.

If cost will be a problem for some of the boys (it was in my old troop) buy a few packages of single edge razor blades, issue one blade to all the boys for their kit and tell them it's ok to 'upgrade' their kit with a SAK classic or small opinel.

I seconed the SAK Secretary! A small but very usable knife. I have one in my minikit:)

Spyderco Ladybug fits, as doe s smallest Cold Steel folder (can't remember name right now).

I keep a Leatherman Micra in mine, as it has been considered by many as the best of the mini-multitools. If cost is indeed an issue, you may want to issue razor blades and jigsaw blades. It may provide a better challenge!

The Spyderco lady bug or the Spydercard. The Spydercard fits in the tin, or can be discreetly rubber-banded to the outside, without anyone noticing.;)
