You often hear of an item needing to have at least 3 uses before being chosen for survival kits, so lets use this rule and come up with items for an Altoids size pocket kit !

What I'd like you to do is suggest ONE item you think should be included and then explain the 3 or more uses for this item !!!

I always cut strips of duct tape and build layers on the bottom of the tin until it's even.

1. Heavy-duty ''bandaid''

2. Flammable tinder

3. tent/tarp repair/grommet reinforcement

easily dozens or hundreds of other uses for duct tape. I also carry a strip wrapped around a toothpick inside the tin, in case I need a single Long piece, usually just a foot or 2

I also place a large boxcutter/razor knife blade and a large needle under the tape strips. saves room inside the tin and prevents ''Sharps'' being loose.

I'll get it started with a needle.

1) Removing splinters.
2) Magnetizing and using for direction finding.
3) Sewing damaged clothing.

safety pin
1. tarp gromet
2. needle to remove splinter
3. fish hook
4. temporary button
5. suture
6.wire tie
7. EDIT - hold my depends on when the SHTF

Maybe I should have said two or more uses !!!

Here is another multi-use~

Good strong cordage such as Bank line.

1) Shelter building.
2) Trap Making.
3) Clothing repair.
4) Fishing.

Altoids

1. They belong in the tin
2. They are delicious, refreshing, and curiously strong
3. In an apocalypse, you can trade them with post-apocalyptic cyber punks... or defeat zombies by jamming one down their throats, which they hate

Large, orange balloon;
water container
compression bandage
tinder
auditory signal
visual signal
pillow
slingshot

P-51 or P-38 Can opener

1) open cans
2) firesteel striker
3) fish lure

Small Bic Lighter...once you have fire, you are covered in many ways.

Boil water
Cook
Heat
Light

Leatherman P4

Taking a pot off the coals
Cutting a notch in wood
Firesteel scraper

Photon Freedom

Signaling
Seeing at night anything you are doing with other items in your kit! :)
Comfort knowing you can see at night.

Anti bacteria cream packet.

1. Kill nasty bacteria on a cut.
2. The stuff is mostly petroleum jelly aka Vaseline so will help with tinder.
3. Petroleum jelly works for chapped lips.

I've always found the altoid survival tin thing to be a bit silly. If I had to cary one, I'd fill it with:

Vicoden!
Relieves pain.
Relieves boredom.
Can be traded for almost anything on earth.

Hard to trade when there's no one else present, but you won't care.

Then there is silence.
