One of my many vices after knives guns and books, is cooking and cooking shows. Don't laugh knowing how to cook got me a lot of dates in high school and college. Any way was watching Good Eats tonight and while Alton was at Whole Foods he whipped out a knife thumbed open the blade opened a bag and closed the knife and pocketed it so fast I doubt even the sheeple noticed. I know that he is a guy into gadgets but still, doing that on a cooking show rocks.

yea alton brown is a great guy seems like a rennissance man knows about everything but isnt a dick about it.....i just love the great facts then bam a great knife.....

Alton Brown I always thought was kind of nerdy until he started showing of some of his knives. I’ve seen him use a number of good production knives from a delica to open a clove of garlic, a chive/leek, or the time he built a smoker with a leatherman I think it was a wave???

He also did a whole show on kitchen knives where he told his audience Not to sharpen their own knives, leave it to a professional. Then he turned his knives over to a guy who sharpened them on a belt grinder then a high speed buffer.

In another show he substituted creamy peanutbutter for tahini in humus. The man is a barbarian! He is anti stuffing in turkeys!

Cooking ? He's one of a number of people in tv who are really wanting to be commedians .His attempts at being a commedian are pathetic.

I think Alton knows he's not a comedian, and that is part of the joke. Admittedly sometimes it gets tired, but it's my favorite cooking show because it makes cooking easier.

I like the show because he attempts to tell you why you should do certain things while cooking, like resting your meat before serving :p

But really, I do find his explanations helpful, if a bit hokey. He doesn't take himself too seriously.

Alton Brown is a Bad Mother-f (Shut your mouth!) Talking 'bout Alton

Alton is the man. Knows food, knives, and gadgets. Makes cooking fun again and knows more tricks than just throwing salt randomly at food (mostly sausage) and shouting "BAM!". Oh wait there's a slug in my garden... BAM! BAM! BAM!

I love the Food Network shows. I can't get enough of Rachel Ray,

but I really enjoy Alton. I learn something every time I watch one of his shows, the why's of doing things the right tools for the job. It's great.

I saw that show recently where he opened the tapioca bag at the grocery. I like the way he just thumbed open the knife, open the bag, closed the knife and had it back in his pocket in a second. It was really quick, but I thought it was a William Henry. I thought to myself, "How cool is that?"

I love to cook and my Mom when I was a kid insisted that I learn to cook. Plus it's a great excuse for buying more knives. ;)

My wife is not a cook (probably why she puts up with all my crap) but she loves watching Alton with me, since he goes into the how's and why's. It motivates her to try stuff out it the kitchen when she would normally just make a PB&J. Of course she calls me at work while she is doing this "Is garlic supposed to be black and crunchy after you saute it?" "No, throw it out and try again on low to med heat". Sigh. Good things she's cute. :D

I saw one of Alton's shows the other night about bananas and plantains. During the first segment he was wearing a neck knife. First time I ever recall seeing anyone wearing a necker on TV. :)

The show where he told people to leave sharpening to a professional ticked me off, but nowhere near as much as that Cajun wannabe and his moronic BAM! does every night. :grumpy:

Hey, I think this is my first post here on BF. :)

Rachel Ray...OH, my GOD! She is one of the sexiest women on TV!

$40 a day...:D.

I really like his show, along with the great knife content it really teaches a lot about the food. He seems to focus more on the general cooking than how to cook one specific recipe. I like that he took the time out to talk about knife maintanence, even if it was just to say leave it to the pros. We need to remember that most people watching wouldn't know the first thing about sharpening a knife.

Good Eats is and always has been a favorite of mine, but more so now that I've seen him using a knife on TV without concern about being PC. It's the science of cooking that I enjoy learning, and he's the best at that. He may be the only person on TV that focuses on the process and chemistry rather than just ingredients.
Besides, he's a homeboy! :)

;)

Dito about Rachel Ray. I saw an episode of her walking out of the ocean with a bathing suit on. This woman is built like they should be. Not too thin, not too big, just the right size.

Anyway, who ever lands her will get a great cook and a nicely shaped wife to boot.

Was the show where the guy had his sharpening shop in a van? And went over steeling?

No, it was a knife destroying shop in a van! But you got the right episode. Brown went on and on about how important it is to steel your knife every time you use it. Well if you can use a steel you can use a crock stick and give your blade a dozen strokes once a week. And it will take you a couple of years to remove as much metal as the chimp with the belt grinder will remove in one sharpening.
