Hey guys,

I want to learn more about aluminum anodizing, and what the terminology means (like hard-anodized, level 3, etc.). Anyone know about it or has links to more info online? Thanks in advance.

I don't have any experience in anodizing or know a lot about it but I believe you use an electrolyte or some kind of conductive chemical to send a current through the aluminum and the surface changes to aluminum oxide, which is much harder than standard aluminum. I believe Type I-III ranks the thickness/hardness. Type II can be done in room temperatures but Type III is done at much lower temperatures with higher current. Type II is about .0005" thick and Type III can be .0009" thick or greater. I know that Type III anodizing cannot easily be dyed many colors, usually dark olive/grey (like Surefire lights), but Type II can take almost any color, like Mag-Lites.
