I cut the bottom inch off aluminum soda pop cans and use as cups to mix/thin small amounts of paints, dyes, and etc. Makes a great use once and throw away container.

Can you cut them in half with a 10" bowie? I saw the big boys doing this with one swing at the Oregon show. Then they cut a free hanging cigarette paper in half. My cans fly clear across the shop.

Hmm, exellent idea! I would never have thought of it. Gotta start savin those cans now.
Bruce, I tried that ole can chop bit one time. Only thing that got chopped was the hood of my car. I would like to see it done tho. My knife was razor sharp but only made it about half way thru.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Cutting an empty can requires tecknique. If you've watched the Japanese sword cutting demonstration you may have noticed that the cut is made on a pulling motion as it hits the bamboo or whatever it is. The sliceing motion just as the blade touches the object has more to do with completing the cut than the sharpness of the knife. I assume that holds true for hanging ropes also.
Pratice with a half can of water.

Something else that works well is to save those old plastic lids from coffee cans and such, they're great for mixing epoxy on.

I use paper plates for mixing epoxy.

Come to think of it, maybe there is a use for those plastic picnic forks after all!
