Aluminum Oxide Blast Media as Refractory?

I was going to use sand in my refractory cement mixture but I kept reading about alumina... so I did a search for aluminum refractory and it appears that aluminum oxide is synonymous with refractory so I guess my question is; has anybody used aluminum oxide media in their forge cement mix?

Is it advisable? I guess I could try a lump of the mix in the proportions I was planning and see how it holds up.
 
Please be carefull! I dont want to be a stick in the mudd but building a forge from something not meant to be that hot may be a bad idea. I dont know but it does not sound safe. Also would the blast media even hold together? Refractory is not very expensive.

I made a small 'puck' in a salmon can so I will see how that turns out after firing it in the forge.
