Hey guys. I don't know if you all have this issue but i have a knife in 01. It seems to dull quick, when i'm not using it. It could sit less than a week and lose all of it's bite. I feel like everytime i want to use it and have to sharpen it, i'm killing the knife slowly lol. Eventually, i'll have used it 80 times before i have a toothpick! I put oil on it, i've tried wax and also silicone. Still it does this. I guess it's "useable" but for certain things i like it to be sharp, such as cutting braided fishing line, whittling, etc. Anybody have this issue, and if so, how have you remedied it?

Carbon steel can oxidize at the edge faster than the thicker portions of a blade, thereby causing it to dull, but generally the edge is going to get a bit toothy in the process so you shouldn't have trouble cutting for a while. I haven't noticed a problem with the Neckmuk John made me. Have you been taking it to a stone when it feels dull after sitting or are you stropping it? I would suggest stropping the edge to a mirror finish and seeing how it holds up because there is less surface area for oxidation to occur on a mirror polished surface and that might be why you are having an issue and I am not

Yeah, i just take it to my sharpmaker quick before i go out. I've never stropped before, always stones or the sharpmaker.

You will have to live a long life before wearing the knife out! LOL
I always touch my knives up before and after use, and stropping is a great way to finish the edge. Don't press too hard when you do it.

I never have this problem. The problem I have is that my blades are my worry stones. I tend to touch them up on my diamonds when I'm sittng with little to do. They never get the chance to get dull unless I screw up the angle.

Like others said, if blade is not used, strop it from time to time. If blade sees no use for a long time, take it out from leather sheath, lightly oil it and store wrapped in piece of paper towel (so you/others don't accidentally cut yourself). If you use that blade, strop it before and after, just a few licks on green compound will do.

Another reason for loosing a bite is way you sharpen the knife. I don't imply anything, but you probably sharpen to a burr which falls out later on. Thus you get a dull blade. Could that be the case?

nope. i always sharpen til no burr on either side. it gets a great edge.

Well, there must be some other reason. JK knives are around 58RC, they should not dull that easily. My Wusthof(s) are softer than JK's, but they still catch a nail after going through a couple of pounds of lamb.
