Am I an anomaly?

I just realized the title is a tongue twister. I apologize.

Anyways, I was thinking about my knife collection, and something occurred to me. I do not have more than 1 knife from any one manufacturer. Is this not unusual? Does anyone else fit into this category?

I own exactly one knife from each of the following manufacturers, and this is my entire knife collection:

Busse
Fallkniven
Al Mar
Benchmade
Spyderco
CRKT
Balisong (PC)
Cold Steel
Case*
Henckels
Opinel
S&W
Imperial
Leatherman (does this count?)

*I actually have an old Case stag fixed blade, aside from my actual knife, but it is a hand me down from my Dad. So, technically, that might make two for Case. I am only counting knives I have purchased, however. And every other knife I have purchased myself.

So, does anyone else just have one knife per company? 5 knives is the minimum.

But I sympathise. I probably have something like two hundred knives, lots of Cold Steel, for example, lots of anonymous junk, too.

(See, before you spoke up, you were an anonymous anomaly.)

But when I get a new knife, I try to get one that fills a gap. I have three Sebenzas and an Umfaan, and each is significantly different than the others. I can't understand more than one close model of a particular knife, and even from different companies, I don't like to overlap style/size/function.

Has it always been this way or have you traded/sold some knives and now have only one of each?

Spydercos are like potato-chips, you can't have just one!

Good luck,
Allen.

It's funny you should ask this because I did have an old Spyderco "standard" back in the 80s. It fell apart after I stopped using it, and I gave it away. So, technically, I have owned two Spydercos. One in the past, and one in the present.

I guess it has always been this way.

Yes, frankly I think your are a total anomaly my good man. :-) Seriously though, when I find a company or maker I like, I usually own several knives in their line. Dozier, Livesay, Benchmade, Spyderco, and cold steel are good examples of this for me. Other times I have just one. A Sifu is my only REKAT, A MOD Dieter CQD MK1 is my only MOD, but thats going to change next week when I buy its baby brother the MKii, so yes I think you are unusual.:)

Yes, it does seem alittle odd, but at least odd in a good way. It seems to me that the more dangerous (and pervasive) trend is a sort of obsession with only one brand of knives. A lot of custom makers have people who are bit fans, but prie and availability usually prevents them from buying 50 Hossom or Dozier knives. Spyderco and Benchmade have Cult followings, and Cold Steel has a bit of one, too. Don't get me wrong, I have my share of CS and a couple spydies, but I do not rush out to buy a knife just because it is a certain brand.

I was the same way until I got my BM 806. However at that point I only had 3 knives, so thats my excuse.

I think it's good to try out different makers.

I have an affinity for several makers of which I have multiple models, but I have a larger number of knives in my collection that are the sole representative of that maker.

Variety is the spice of life

The anomaly is that you have no Swiss Army Knives :p

I agree with DB, it is good to have variety of makers, it allows for better comparison across your different knives.

When I really like a particular model I sometimes like to have more than one variantion on it. I don't really own all that many knives, but I do have two REKAT Sifus (green/stonewashed and black/Black-T), two Kershaw Boas (multi-colored and black), and two Spyderco Natives (black with shell inlay and blue). Not only does this insure that I have a backup if anything should happen to one of them; it also makes it much easier for me to accessorize. :D
