Am I being anal about my Buck 501 folder?

Heyas fellow knife knuts. A picture's worth a thousand words, so...

501-BUCK.jpg

I've had this folder since I was 16. It is part of my EDC rotation, and sees light use such as whittling, boxes, cords, etc. (I'm 35 now).

I keep her hair-popping sharp, and the edge shows a lil' wear&tear from repeated sharpenings, but that is not my issue what-so-ever...

I've recently noticed that there seems to be a tiny amount of play in the locked-open position, and also, that there is also a tiny amount of play on both wooden (faux, I'm sure...) inlays. I'm talking about a couple thousanths of an inch in all (3) instances, but it's irking me.

Should this just be expected from a pocketknife after this many years, or do you think that I should take advantage of Buck's lifetime guarantee and send it in for "adjustment or replacement"?

Or am I just being anal?

I sent a Zippo lighter back a few months ago, and they replaced it quickly. Made me think... (Zippo has that same deal).

Mayhaps I'm too perfectionist. Your opinions?

P.S.: I'm not a knifemaker. I'd destroy it trying to take it apart.

TIA

I would send it back and they will more than likely send you a new one.

I would think it's got some sort of sentimental value... I'd buy a new one and put the first one away somewhere.

Better yet, I'd continue to carry the first one and not care about a little "play"

I'm not sure I want to give up the Buck, for sentimental reasons. Has anybody ever dealt with the Buck warrantee people? Could I include instructions that I don't want it replaced, but adjusted only? Or just returned if this is not possible? Anyone know?

Wow, that was scary MelancholyMutt. You typed exactly what I did at the same time.

(i.e. Your reply came as I submitted the post after yours...)

Yes, I have heard of people specifically requesting to have the knife repaired and not replaced, for sentimental reasons. Joe Houser is the man to talk to at Buck. He's a great guy and goes the extra mile for his customers.

send them an e-mail and ask if you can get it repaired... letting them know that the knife has sentimental value and that replacement is not an option...

They should have an answer for you...

Edited to note...

Yeah, what Buzzy said...LOL:D

Heyas Buzz, how should I contact Joe Houser particularly? I'm not familiar with the knife community today. I've had my Bucks for almost 20 years... E-mail? Snailmail? Phone? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

in most lockbacks a little play will develop over time(anyone who owns a Spydie chinook knows what im talking about) Does it effect performance? does the lock fail? As for the play in the wood inlays you could always take them off and re-glue them on.
