For the first time in my knife collecting hobby, I am considering not using a knife. I just purchased a Manix 2 in cts-bd30p. Since it is a sprint run, I am considering not using it. It seems really weird to let it sit in a drawer. I really want to carry it and use it though. Plus I since it is not really a special steel I lean towards using it also. Does anyone think it is worth keeping unused? I just also bought an all black Benchmade Adams that is 1of 1000 but I have carried it and used it very lightly. It is no longer considered NIB.
Am I being ridiculous?
Thanks.

Really, it is your call on this one. I have plenty of knives that are sprint runs, out of production, or otherwise hard to find/impossible to replace. My thought is that I do not buy knives just to simply let them sit around unused. I say use it, but I no one will judge you for keeping it pristine.

Depends on whether you are a hobbyist or a collector.

I am a hobbyist - therefore every purchase I make gets used or moves along to someone else. I see knives as tools that were designed to be used.

If you are a collector / investor - there may be personal value to you to hold onto it and make it a safe queen.

I think only you can decide.

Belly, it is your decision. Sometimes folks will buy a "backup" copy of a sprint run to sit NIB and will use the other one. There are a lot of options.

I don't think it is silly IF you are planning to hold onto it and then sale it when people are looking for that particular sprint run. The highest I've spent are for the 4 custom folders I have, with the highest one being the JWS with the lightning strike grips that I got at Christmas a couple weeks ago, and cost was $600. There are some folks who would put that puppy right into the safe, or in a display, and that is fine because it is their knife to do what they want with it. I put it in my pocket and carry it and use it. Though my daily knife needs don't tax the capabilities of the knife, over time small marks and scratches will appear. The reason I'm telling this is to say that you only go through this life ONCE, so enjoy your toys while you can!

I don't see that as being a variation that will be in high demand. If it was an S90V version it would be a different story. The fact that they are still available shows it isn't in high demand. Some of the other variations were sold out months before they were made. I don't see the value going up much so you might as well use it.

That said, I have so many knives there is no point in using them all. So if you don't have a use or don't really like it, then keeping in the safe can't hurt for now. But if you like the knife I say use it. The Manix 2 is a nice knife and a great EDC. My only suggestion is to loctite or put teflon tape on both pivot screws so the blade doesn't loosen up if you have to use it hard.

I can't think of any knife made famous by collecting dust.

Owning a knife that doesn't get carried/used to me is like being with a girl without the sex. Lots of money invested with no return. You're too afraid to do anything and satisfied with just staring, maybe the occasional fondling.

I like to use my knives like high-class hookers; always treat them nice, but not afraid to get dirty. :p

I've gone through this dilemma a few times...but not with knives. 1:18 scale model cars. i pick up a new one every once in a while if its something i really like.

just recently i bought an Ecto-1 1:18 model. (yes ecto-1 from ghostbusters). It's probably my favorite movie of all time and i'm a real nerd for GB stuff. So when I heard they were going to make a quality scale model of it. I searched and searched and ordered one. 100 bucks later its going to arrive at my house tomorrow. I've thought, i could leave it in the original box etc...and maybe sell it years down the road for more than what I paid for it. or I could take it out of the box and set it up in a decent display case that most all of my favorite 1:18s are inside. This is the most I've ever spent on a model...and I'm leaning towards taking it out and putting it in a nice display case. mainly because....I dont realistically see myself selling it in the future. So I might as well display it in a nice way instead of leaving it in a cardboard retail box.

ask yourself: Do I ever see myself really selling it? if no then carry it and use it. now dont go out hacking trees branches with it but use it somehow.

similar to people who spend 60k on a car to leave it sit in their garage...so that ONE day they MAY sell it....its a car, its meant to be driven.

I do have a CF spyderco Kopa that sits in its box that i take out for when i need to be dressed nice (which is rare) I'll carry that.

I don't buy anything without considering what it does or what it's good for. A knife stored in a drawer can have a use the same as any other knife.

A knife's used as a collector's item's purpose is to grow in collector's value.
That's what it does. That's what you buy it for and you sell it when you're satisfied with the growth in price or keep it because you like it.

It doesn't have to cut anything to be actively doing anything or serving a purpose. Those who do buy a knife to use them, such as myself are looking for something they can use as an EDC knife but I don't rule out collector pieces.

If it doesn't have a purpose, don't buy it but the common misconception is that collecting knives is leaving those knives without a purpose when their purpose all along is to grow in value and to become more and more collectible over time.

What's the purpose in collecting coins? It's the same ideal.

If it were my knife I would either buy 2 sprint runs or get a regular production model and keep the sprint run mint.

The popular answer that most will say is.... "use it". The reality is most of the "use it" crowd has some knives they really dont use because of their cost or rarity. Look at all the Hinderer "hard use" knives that are in perfect shape are trading on the forum.
Its your call and don't feel guilty for not using your knife. Even if you only use the knife for flipping in front of the TV, you still are enjoying it.

Actually, I use all of my expensive folders. The fixed blades, not as much, but that's just for lack of opportunity. I guess I can't really justify having a safe queen because if I like a knife enough for it to be a safe queen, there's no way I'm getting rid of it. The knives that get used the least in my collection are the cheaper ones, which have been replaced by nicer knives. When I get a custom DDR or 5, they'll all take turns getting EDC'ed. I'm a user through and through. But that doesn't mean that YOU have to be.

Personally, though, I'd use that sucker. There will be other sprints, some of which might be better collector items, and if you WANT to use it, chances are it's going to happen sooner or later. Or you'll just lose the thing because you don't use it at all. In either case, you'd be depriving yourself of much enjoyment.

You are definitely being silly.

The rough G10 and the sweet steel on the CTSBD30P manix 2 make it a pretty awesome work knife and it seems a shame to leave it sitting around. I was a little apprehensive about using the hell out of mine at first, but I got over that after cutting a buttload of carpet with it, opening a few bags of cement, prying this and that, etc. :D In short it makes a great user knife and I definitely recommend you put it to use, as I think you'll be happy with it.

If you like the knife that much then chances are you will never sell it so why not use it ?

I have sometimes felt the same but then I get a big sense of relief when I put that first scratch on it, gotta be a user then !!!

I really like my manix2 BD30P, and I use it. The grippy G-10 is excellent and I prefer BD30P over S30v. Every one is different, but personally I use all of my knives.

P.S. I have a para2 20CP sprint in my pocket as I write this.

I agree. One some new knives I have struggled with the question to use it or not. I then will go outside and carve my kids initials in a tree. It's very liberating.

That knife has been my main edc for the better part of a year now. It's up to you but in my opinion it's to good not to use.

I recently scratched my new orange kershaw packrat and felt that same sense of relief. Using it hard now LOL.
