I wanted to take Takako to a nice hotel in tokyo for her birthday in February.
I go look at one hotel in Tokyo bay, and the damned thing STARTS at 400$ a night, and thats for the cheap room.

Is it me? Or is that just too much money for a night in a hotel?

Yep. I paid less than that for a 5 day trip to thailand. That's why many japanese go aboard for trips.

For that price to be realistic, it would have to include cultural entertainments from historical Japan presumably no longer legal.

you wish!
(actually, prostitution is basically legal here, so logn as it does not violate the child labor law, which it frequently does)

No way, Munk, even using the pool is an extra 30$ charge!
Can you believe that ?!?

$400 a night is probably reasonable for something in the Tokyo Bay area. Japan is a pretty expensive place to vacation from what I've heard and read. :(

Danny, that IS cheap!
Just do it...

Think of the brownie points ;)

Have a GREAT time.

$400 is the going rate for a room in Midtown Manhattan.

Airfare from Tokyo would be a killer . . .

I can get you into the Comfort Inn here in Rutland for $69.00. You'll have to pay airfare!

$400 a night for a hotel?

expensive.

$400 a night for a hotel room with your wife in it?

Priceless!!!

:)

Danny, perhaps I'm not as romantic as some of our friends here, but $400 for ANY hotel is too damn much. I'm a newly wed, and I wouldn't pay that. 400 smackers is 2/3 of my monthly house payment. 400 clams is 5 or 6 months of cable service. 400 bones is 4 VERY nice dinners out. 400 yingyangs is about 20 movie dates ($14 to get in plus a pepsi and popcorn).
My wife and I spent about 225 a night for a nice hotel in downtown Louisville for a little romantic trip. was the room worth 225? No it was an older hotel, the room was small, the heater took 45 mins to warm up (kid you not). But it was pretty swanky and we could walk to all kinds of need stuff.
I'll put it this way. If you think your wife would absolutely love it, then go for it. It's her day. Make her happy. She seems like a very good woman. However, if she's the type to think that the money could be spent better on something else, then maybe do a smaller (and cheaper) gesture, then spend the money on something that she'll love, but didn't ask for.

That's pretty steep. I haven't paid more than $225 for a room in the U.S. - between shopping around ahead of time and being sure to ask for their best rate (most desk people will work with you to come up with a discount you qualify for, and if you travel a lot, there are discounts for almost everyplace).

Rooms in Paris ran 300ish in the corporate business areas. When I went by myself, I found a place in walking distance to the Louvre, Musee d' Orsay and everything for ~$30, probably ~$40 now.

The best bargain hotel was the Clarion Inn in Morgantown, which was ~$60 and absolutley beautiful. My wife and I stopped there and it was one of the best surprises we had travelling. Marble bathroom, heated towel racks, beautifull chandelier in the main room...unfortunately, the last time I was there it seems they replaced all of the beautiful, albeit slightly worn, expensive old stuff in the rooms with ugly, new, cheap stuff. It drives me nuts when people do stuff like that.

IMHO, your best bet is to look for a smaller, older hotel - you might get lucky and fall into something really beautiful. I've stayed in a lot of Hiltons, Sheratons and Marriotts and with rare exception, there really isn't much about them that justifies the cost.

missing one:

$400 is a nice grouping of knives or khukuris!!

Danny, if I'm correct, it sounds like you and the Mrs. are miles from Tokyo most of the time. I have done the $400 a night in Tokyo for two weeks at a time courtesy of Uncle Sam, while working with the police there on shabu/hiropong labs. I was singularly unimpressed with what you get for the money. May I suggest....do you have a friend who lives in Tokyo in, say, an apartment...who might be persuaded to take a visit elsewhere for a couple days? Other Special Agents have done this for me in Tokyo, Bangkok, Beruit, and Bogota to name a couple....the other guy may be thinking it would be nice to get the old lady out of the inner city. Doesn't hurt to ask. Otherwise, chose lodging a short comute from downtown, go in for the day and return to lodgings after supper in the evening. I do this regularly when dealing with both New York and Washington, D.C.......it's always cheaper.

You can stay in my town for 40 bucks a night, surrounded by mountains, trout streams, lakes, elk, deer, and drunks.

anywhere in Tokyo you can pitch a tent?

very funny Dan. Ive done that many times on the train...

Munk, your town gets my votes. I learned to flyfish over here and all they have are bluegill! Im dying to actually catch a trout in a river. Oh man that sounds like heaven to me these days.

We live about one hour northeast of Tokyo in Noda. Its not a long trip on the train, but I wanted to take her somewhere nice near the bay where she could see the boats and all that....

Hey, I bet rooms are cheap in Phuket. If you've got a week, consider going outside Japan, or at least outside Tokyo.

Not an option? Then you just gotta pay the going rate. The temporary drain in your pocket will be more than made up for by the impression in your significant other's memory that will last a lifetime.

Maybe you could pick a different bay with a lovely view. One of my best surprises for my wife was a time I took her to a resort in Avila Beach, California. The facility was new and grand with a lovely ocean view. It was on a slight promontory which was away from the major coast highway. The village was charming. One of the things that helped keep the price low was that it was just a short distance down the coast from the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Station. This didn't bother us at all and made the deal a real steal. I think that the place that we stayed has since been converted to condominiums, but at the time it probably cost something like $60.00 a night. Think creatively and use the internet to search for something interesting.

One website that I have been using recently is www.tripadvisor.com . It gives real reviews from other travelers and links to multiple travel reservation websites. Through this I found a great hotel in a great suburb of Dublin (Ballsbridge) for under 100 Euros per night. I also found a recently renovated motel in La Jolla California for under $100 per night (plus taxes). This was a two room suite with a small kitchen with granite countertops. I wouldn't have known how nice the place had become without tripadvisor.
