That's pretty steep. I haven't paid more than $225 for a room in the U.S. - between shopping around ahead of time and being sure to ask for their best rate (most desk people will work with you to come up with a discount you qualify for, and if you travel a lot, there are discounts for almost everyplace).
Rooms in Paris ran 300ish in the corporate business areas. When I went by myself, I found a place in walking distance to the Louvre, Musee d' Orsay and everything for ~$30, probably ~$40 now.
The best bargain hotel was the Clarion Inn in Morgantown, which was ~$60 and absolutley beautiful. My wife and I stopped there and it was one of the best surprises we had travelling. Marble bathroom, heated towel racks, beautifull chandelier in the main room...unfortunately, the last time I was there it seems they replaced all of the beautiful, albeit slightly worn, expensive old stuff in the rooms with ugly, new, cheap stuff. It drives me nuts when people do stuff like that.
IMHO, your best bet is to look for a smaller, older hotel - you might get lucky and fall into something really beautiful. I've stayed in a lot of Hiltons, Sheratons and Marriotts and with rare exception, there really isn't much about them that justifies the cost.
