..I feel like I should get a knife and carry it with me everywhere I go for self protection, am I being realistic here?
I live in Toronto, lots of crime here, and the gun laws in Canada are tough so I can't get a gun, but why not carry a knife for self protection? I don't think I would actually USE a knife against anybody, but I would feel safer knoving I have a knife in my pocket.!

who in here carries a knife with them?

Always carry a knife, but not for self protection. Carry my brain for that.

Let no one ever from henceforth say one word in any way countenancing war. It is dangerous even to speak of how here and there the individual may gain some hardship of soul by it. For war is hell, and those who institute it are criminals. Siegfried Loraine Sassoon

As you might imagine, there are a great many folks here who carry knives, but they do so for any number of reasons, of which self defense is only one.

I'm not quite sure how having a knife for self defense would give you piece of mind walking the streets if you're pretty sure you would never use it to defend yourself. You may want to post this question on the Practical Tactical forum. I'm no expert in this area, but I think the prevailing wisdom in this field would recommend that if you're not willing to actually use a self defense tool, it's probably best not to present it at all.

Good point, I know what you are saying, but IF! someone came to me on th street asking me for my wallet and if they had a knife in their hand you better belive I would take my OWN knife out too! but if I was in a confrontation with someone who DOES NOT have a weapon then I would use my HEAD first and then my fists in neccessary! but not a knife.

The way I see it, I would pull out a knife ONLY IF one does the same to me.

Having a knife on you for self defence may be more dangerous than not having one, if you have not done some training.
Toronto is pretty safe as cities go, but you can be wounded or killed here any day of the week if you are careless or simply unlucky. If you feel the need to carry for self defence, [and no, that does not make you crazy], it's time to do some serious training, and not just with knife techniques. If you feel the way you do and you don't study martial arts, then you ARE crazy.

I don't study Martial Arts, and I belive I can protect myself without Martial arts, but what if lets say I am on the subway and soem dude comes to me with a knife asking me to hand him my money? do you think I am going to stand there and be his victim? NO WAY MAN! I want to stand up for myself and protect myself! martial arts wont do me any good if he has a knife! it's better if I have one handy too!

I think you should ask these questions in the Tactics and Training forums where folks who know what they are talking about can give you sound advice.

I always carry a knife. But I never carry a Weapon. And even if threatened by an assailant with a knife, I am not sure at all that I would pull mine.

I think you are very Wrong about stating that martial arts would not help you if your assailant has a knife and you don't. In the tactical forums, there are highly skilled individuals who often say that using a knife is an option of last resort. A knife should Never be pulled to threaten or intimidate, only to Cut. Your assailant you never realize you have a knife until he finds himself bleeding.

Things happen Very fast in these situations. If you are not adequately prepared (trained), you will most likely do more harm than good by pulling out a knife. NEVER pull a knife unless you are prepared to use it AND to be cut. This is a very serious matter. Pulling a knife in this situation may very well make a violence of some sort inevitable. Please think about getting some training before you contemplate using knives as weapons.

Only pull a knife if you are sure to use it. Only use a knife if you are ready to accept the consequences. It's not just about knowing how, but how it will affect you: injury, death, court, incarceration, permanent emotional (and/or physical) damage, hyper-guilt, etc... without proper training, all this stuff will pop into your head, at the wrong time, when you think you need to pull the knife... so, weigh it now and know that you'll "waste" valuable time weighing it again if ever a confrontation occurs and you don't have adrenaline management training.

Training is more important than any tool you have with you.

You are the weapon, everything else is just an extension of your actions.

If a guy wants just your money, GIVE IT TO HIM! Your safety is not worth risking for any amount that you may have on you.
You could carry a second wallet with a small amount of throw money or use debit/credit cards. I rarely have cash on me at all anymore with the widespread use of debit cards in Vancouver.

If the guy is not interested in money, but wants to attack you, then try to escape first. If that doesn't work then you have to fight for your life with whatever is at hand. Using force should be your last option .

Proper training would help you prepare for street encounters. A weapon is not a magic talisman that wards off evil. The BG will be taking note of the person he selects as his prey. He will also be able to tell if the person he's dealing with has the resolve to carry his defensive actions through, weapon or not.

As a retired Deputy Sheriff, it is MY advice, that UNLESS you HONESTLY believe that your life is is danger RIGHT NOW, that you give the "robber" your money, your watch, your $150 Nike Tennis shoes, your bicycle

, and walk-away with your life.

Playing "macho with a knife" just isn't worth the price.

.

BTW, I would also look into carrying a can of some GOOD pepper-spray. A knife (or a gun) are ONLY "last resort" tools, and should ONLY be used after EXTENSIVE training with them!.

Canada's gun laws notwithstanding, I find it unlikely that you're going to find a country, state, or locality that will give a child a license to carry a gun.
