First off, I have no problems with Strider, I have an AR and it's my EDC ( until Jerry makes a folder!) but I'm finding it hard to swallow the extremely high prices for their nightmare grind customs. I've held them and they look great, but a mere grind and maybe some handle grooves isn't worth an extra $600-700 is it? I know they're stamped with Duane Dwyer or Mick's personal mark, but really, does that justify the cost? And yes, I know if some people are willing to pay it, they'll make it, it's just I don't see the correlation behind an extra grind versus the extra money making any sense. Also, some of the guys on USN are just haters of all other knives and I've seen people here say Busse is the best, but never that it's the best because something else sucked like on the USN. I dunno, I like being in the Busse crowd, more friendly, but I do like the look of Striders...

Busse and Swamp Rat people have the right idea: love their knives, and don't dismiss other peoples knives.

There is plenty of room for expensive S30V, even if I'm never going to be one of the people who will buy it.

Let's be cautious with this one friends. My advice is spend what you are comfortable spending, regardless of the maker. If you are satisfied with what you get for the money you paid, then who is to say what is too much. Busse is my blade of choice and probably always will be. I have never owned a Strider, but I have handled them. I can see why they have their champions and their detractors, just like I can see why Busse or any other maker has champions and detractors. As long as a purchases satisfys you, who cares what other folks think. If you can't bring yourself to spend the extra money for a custom anything, then you probably shouldn't. Firearms are a similar world. If a Custom Shop Springfield Armory seems a bit too much like over kill when one of their base models would work just fine for you then go with your gut.

I have never owned, used, or even held a Strider, so I am not qualified to comment on it's merits. However, the question of worth I can comment on. The answer is, yes, the Strider is worth it to someone who is willing to swap the money for the product. The utility they get from it may be their need for a hard use folding knife, because they want to be "in" with that particular crowd, to have something that most people won't have, or maybe just snob appeal. The reason doesn't matter, If they are happy with the transaction it is "worth it" to them.

Is it worth it to me? No, because I would not swap that amount of money for one. To me, that money would be knife money made unavailable for Busse purchases and that is not an acceptable tradeoff for me.

Agreed. There are a lot of great knife designs on the market. For me, some of them are Striders, as well as several other companies and makers.

Everyone is entitled to their own views.

All we try to do is help people gain as much information as we can.

It amazes me how often someone will say "Brand X bites", and their only basis is heresay and speculation, not actual experience.

I recall one comment that was along the line of "I can tell from the picture that knife won't be comfortable nor will the steel stand up to hard use". Now how can someone tell from a picture how a knife will feel, let alone perform.

Why person A buys an item that person B passes on will continue to be a mystery. If we had the answer, we'd be in advertising/marketing.

Happens in knives, guns, watches, cars, just about anything. Some people will pay a higher price because of perceived value. I buy Busses because I know what they can do.

I've owned alot of different brand of knives including Randall Made, Strider, Mad Dog, etc. I still have a few Randall's, but no more Striders and only one Mad Dog, I do have over (50) Busse knives, so you can see where my interest lie as far as what I have found to be the best for me. The one thing I have noticed about the Busse owners is they don't give you crap if you happen to also like other knives, after all, there are alot of excellent knifemakers out there and (Jerry don't look) you shouldn't really limit yourself to only look at one maker. Like the others have said, a knife (or anything else) is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, sometimes though, you find out you should have paid a little more, that is why alot of us buy Busses', no matter how little or how much you paid for it, it will do the job.
:D

I like Busse... He's the bringer of Death Chat :D  :p

Edit: I can't type it the way I thought it. I make no claims or accept responsibilities for any posts made after 8 pm :p

Who said Randucci was a small hog? They had better get their eyes checked! :D I would say that American Kensei havin' basitd is a major hog! :D

It seems that our levels of comfort with the price of a knife (or anything else, for that matter) depends heavily on what we know from others who have either purchased or considered purchasing a knife. If we didn't get input such as "that knife (or "no knife") is worth that much" from folks on the net or at the local shop, we could only base our estimates of worth on comparisons with other knives we own/have handled.

On that level, as many have said above (note Hammy's comments), if it feels good, and you feel good having it, then the price is likely okay.

On the flip side, I've used the net to help justify what I spend on knives (not necessarily how much I spend on each knife). For example: randucci owns 50 Busse knives...even at the lowball estimate of $250/knife, that comes to $12,500 (not including shipping). That leaves me at least $10,000 behind on Busse purchases (unless my wife sees this and bashes my head in first :p ).

Cheers

It depends on what you're comparing too. Custom made knives are generally expensive. I don't think they would bother making a custom AR for example and charging the same price as the regular one. Dissing other forums is usually frowned on anyway. There have been WAY too many cross forum flame wars.

I like big dumb blondes but I haven't turned down any petite brunettes either...what was the question? :footinmou

Holly Crap! I spent $12,500 on Busse knives!!! Lets see, $250 for the AK, $247 for the SH proto, $200 for the SH1 with Holy Terror, $175 for the SHBM, well, maybe I didn't spend that much. I better put myself on a budget. Anyone have some old beat up Busse straight handled knives or a Silent Knight they want to sell for $150?
 :D ;)

Maybe I didn't "lowball" :footinmou

Regardless, I can still use you as a scapegoat when confronted with my CC bill ("Look, dear, I'm not as nuts as--or at least I have spent less than--randucci. I've still got at least a couple thou before you should even think of raising that frying pan  ")

By any means necessary...
