After gettting the Buck 102, I put my edge on it. I was able to use it in some kitchen work, and piddleing around the house. It has 440C steel, and it kwpt its edge. I would say it is on par with my S30V bladed knives, is this normal? After preparing a three course meal, I cut up some boxes to go in the trash. This thing still has a hair popping edge on it, so what gives???

Thanks,
John

seems that you know how to sharpen a knife is what gives...
i never had any problum with 440 c/hc/m or the old simi hollow grind...

From my experience, 440C is a great steel, and I doubt that most people would be able to tell the difference (practically speaking)... especially since Buck seems to do a great job with heat treating.

...It has never been said that 440C wouldn't hold an edge John. My knives with 440C have always held great edges. It's one of my favorite blade steels bar none...Lotsa folks did say that it was so darn hard to sharpen it but that's a problem I've never seen. I learned the old way...with benchstones...Seems you know how to sharpen 'em too as Dave has noted...440C is terrific steel IMHO...

Well guys, I am sure that most of you can put a darn nice edge on a Buck also. I have spent many hours reading different technics and years practicing. I watched my grandfather sharpen his knives, and I try to mimic him. I have tried a few of the gizmos out there (only one that does good touch ups , the sharpmaker). I find myself going back to bench stones, ceramic rods, and leather just like my grandfather. This seems to be the best way (for me) to get that hair popping edge. You just cant beat these old or new Buck knives. I have compared the newer steel to the 440C , and I could tell the 440C kept the scary edge a little longer. The 420HC would not shave when the 440C would, but I could not tell the difference while cutting cardboard.
