Am I getting too knife dependent?

Yesterday, I've got to cut a few electric wires. I just went for my knife to cut them. Only after I finished cutting, I realized that I had my leatherman with me. Silly me. I should have used leatherman to cut wires not a knife.
It seems that knife becomes my first tool of choice more and more.

I don't see any problem  ...your alright  ...carry on :D

I know I'm too knife dependent, I find myself cutting open packages that I could easily rip open. All well.

I've never found a multi tool to be that useful. None of the tools are large/strong enough for heavy tasks, the blade is often a crappy steel that is hard to get to, and I really don't have a need for pliers every day.

Use the knife then resharpen it.

I don't cut metal or wire with a knife blade unless it's way too far to go for a proper tool. It's happened. But not often. I always carry a Micra and on weekends I usually carry a Wave in addition to my EDC. My blade is not a screwdriver, prybar, or wire cutter. That being said I have been known to cut open packages that I could have ripped open with my hands.

I don't understand why a lot of people here use knives to cut things you generally don't need a knife for, like seperating some banana's or opening a snicker's bar wrapper (Both of which i've seen posted here). It's less efficient and will put additional wear on whatever the knife is. Oh well, not my knives or time, not gonna kill me to watch other people do what I won't.

I think what I have become too dependant on my knives for is kitchen duties. I always use the knife that's on me in the kitchen when cooking. Yesterday I used some of our kitchen knives and realized just how dull they are. The one I was using took noticable force compared to my EDC's just to cut off a piece of butter from the stick. Guess it's back to the benchstones for em. I never use them, but I feel bad knowing others are using such dull knives.

I'm careful not to use my knife for easy tasks, it just takes longer. I rip open my letters and anything else I can. Once it becomes a little bothersome to rip open, I'll cut it. I am in no way judging others if they do cut light things with their knives, it's just not for me.

I strip wire at work alot and find myself using hte blade over my Charge or a pocket knife. I too depend on it alot but thats not bad. Thats why I carry a knife, So i dont have to rip open things and I can open my beer without the use of a sharp corner. As far as I am concerned I am naked w/o my knife(knives usually)....it should be illegal for me NOT to wear one.:D

Yeah, nothing wrong. I was just joking to myself.

That's why I carry leatherman and small prybar everyday in addition to knife. I generally went for leatherman to cut wires unless leatherman was not around. I was amused when I found that I went for knife first without thinking (and actually cut wires with it). I did not think of leatherman until I finished.

I do that, too. Indeed, knife comes in handy. Partly for fun, partly practical.

Speaking myself, it's fun to use. ;)

True to be told. Sometimes using knife is not the best solution, but using knife to open boxes and letters is fun. ^^

So true. :D

Sorry, didn't mean to come accrosss rude. (Home sick today and I'm a little out of it) I guess my point was that I don't reach for the knife without thinking. I'm one of those weird folks who has to stop, figure out what tool would be best, then use that tool. I just have to. It's a handicap when you're trying to get stuff done fast.

I once used a knife for every chore when another tool would have been fine. Now, I try to think about the best way to handle something (like quoted above) before cutting.

I say this in earnest and in no condescending way as I more than once had a knife on a power cord that was still plugged into an outlet. No shocks, but enough to make me less 'knife dependent.'

No offense taken. I didn't think your post was rude or what. I just took it as clarifying your stance, and I fully agree with you. I made a reply to make things a bit clearer, and to show my agreement to your points. I'm sorry if my reply made you feel uneasy.

Take care and get well soon.

Speaking only for myself here (yeah, right!) :D I think the reason I use my knife for so much stuff is that I'm always looking for something to cut open. I mean, no matter the task, I'm always tring to figure out if I'm going to need to draw my knife. [I'm going to type a response to this. Is there any way I can incorporate my knife into the job? No? Damn!]

And I'm the guy who reaches for a Nimravus to slice off the end of a 3 Musketeers bar. Why not just tear it open? Because if I tore it open, I wouldn;t need to use my knife!

Charge Ti is 154cm, Charge TTi is s30v. I agree that often they are, but now there are some higher quality options.

I've been using my new Charge ti a lot more than I thought I would/need to. I still rely heavily on my BM610, though.

I use a knife for opening envelopes and slicing tape on boxes because it's usually much cleaner. If it isn't junk mail, I like to keep the envelope intact. I reuse boxes, so I don't like to strip the outer layer of cardboard off by ripping the tape. For other stuff, I'll give it a tug for a second, then slice it open because I'm impatient.
