Just got back from a gun show and bought my first BM the 550 griptilian. I wanted it for work and think that I got a good deal on it 65$. Any opinions on how it will stack up to heavy abuse

as long as you don't use it as a pry-bar & put excessive stress on the pivot, this knife is an excellent performer. You'll be happy. :)

You will be very happy!
I once owned the 550 plain-edge and loved it EXCEPT...
the oval thumb-hole.
My thumb sometimes slipped off the thumb-hole without opening the blade.
So I gave the 550 to my brother-in-law and bought the 551 with thumb-studs.

Good luck,
Allen.

Ive had one since they first came out. I think its great utility knife, stand up to allot of use and keep going.

It will do fine, a 551 just replaced several knives that were in an EDC rotation(some CRKT and one CS) Seems like good stuff to me.

I have a 551 and 556. They're pretty tough knives IMO. Like Fishface says, don't pry with it.

The Griptilian is a good first Benchmade folder as it introduces you to the Axis-lock and some pretty good steel in the 440C stainless. I also prefer the models with the (dual) thumbstuds better than the "hole", as I can open the blade alittle quicker and more positively with the studs.
