If I pay different folks to get my knife customized?

I gave up on convexing my knife, so I have a local knife guy doing it for me.

I'm not a woodworker, so I am buying a custom set of Cocobolo slabs.

and I already paid for a custom leather sheath.

should I be trying these things myself? I know if I do, I'm just wasting my time and money.

It's still me using the knife in the bush though...

thoughts?

If you outsource your bow-drill and batoning work, then yes, I'd say your BH-ness is in jeopardy. In this case I think you're ok.
Of course *I* have no authority on the issue, and don't even rate a # myself! :-D

Yes.

In your defense I didn't read any of what you said and was just responding to the title. I could be wrong. But I doubt it. Until you own five of every knife ever made you are a sorry excuse for a Beckerhead and you should regret the day your mother spawned you. Women will see you as less than a real man, and there is a good chance that you will stub your toe tomorrow morning upon waking.

Kidding.

Dude, my first experience with trying to make a synthetic materials sheath resulted in me needing a new toaster oven. My first attempt at convexing is still in progress, and we are sitting at 3 weeks now. My first attempt at modding my handles, well, that was okay, it came out like I wanted, but thankfully there I set the bar pretty low. I would like to do better though. So I keep on keepin on.

There is a lot of stuff that I can't do, and I either pay someone else to do it, or figure it out myself. If it is cheaper to get someone else to do it than it is for me to do it, that is the route I go.

I have a formula to work that out.

Hours I would spend learning and then producing what I am after X rate of pay I normally get at work. If that is greater than the cost of getting it done, not worth it, unless it is something I am particularly interested in learning to do on my own.

i just use the things as God made them. i rarely bother with mods and all that, but the ones that do, make some pretty things. shrug :)

I come from a Contractor background. I sub out a lot of things so I get multiple other companies involved to get my tasks done.

I guess this is the way I am with the modifications I am making.

At the end of the day I am happy and the knife looks great and performs just as good.

If you want to learn knife making, modifications, handle sculpting, then more power to that end. And start with cheaper projects and work up.
Otherwise, mod a BK2 however you can.
I got mine from Chestnut Ridge, cause I know I can't make scales that well. And if/when I want to try I'll start with a cheaper item like my Ontario 12" machete.

There is know reason to explain yourself, if your going custom and paying for it instead of doing it yourself its all good.

All I ask is to see some pics once its done so I can do it myself....;)

Nay, ye be not a lesser Beckerhead.

Some folks just don't want to or can mod a knife. I like Bladite's response, Jeebus Cristos, just use'em. LOL.

Hey Quarter Tank......

No hoo hoo here.......I very rarely mod guns, cars, etc........I own em and use em but, other than changing the tires or swapping out stocks or hanging lasers and lights, I figure I will make 'em worse not better........A man's gotta know his limitations....Use 'em and have fun........

All Best...

like ethan said, you have to know your limitations....in my case I did try to make my own puukko knife, and well it came on a scale 1 to 10....a 5...but I was just aiming at achieving a knife,,,,looks aside....then I tried the handles on the bk11...that came out pretty good and polishing the blade...... however I gave up convexing a knife... tooo hard, so botom line I did try all this becuase it was kind of a personal achivement for me to make this....kind of a hobby, but that is just me. in the end it is just to have fun, whether it is modding it, or just using them

I like to modify things if I can. Working with your hands is fun, and if you're lucky you learn something useful along the way. That and I like learning how to make and do new things.
