Am I losing my mind?!?

I NEVER, EVER, EVER expected to type this. Of all the knife companies makers there are some that I have sworn off and/or decided not to buy from: CRKT, Taylor Brands, Frost, Gerber and new Camillus.
Nothing against any of them I just don't like them. But, tonight I have found myself thinking about a Gerber. The Applegate-Fairbairn Covert in 154CM. To restate the question, am I going crazy or is this a decent knife? Help!

It is probably worth trying. But I think you want to have another opinion from somebody who have purchased a knife more recently. I heard they are not quite the same these days.
The one that I had was quite interesting, though not so practical in my opinion. Certainly was a fun to flip open and close. I thought it was quite decent. But it was probably 10 years old or so.

I have had the Gerber "Mini-Covert" for several years. I am sure mine is not 15l4cm. I am reasonably sure that it is the so called "mystery steel". I could care less. I like it very much. I frequently have a hard time choosing to carry it, or carry my Delica 3.

I can't imagine why you wouldn't love the AF Covert, especially if you already find yourself attracted. Give Gerber a break, i have 6 different styles and love them all. I see no lack of quality, function or durability. regards Henry

I have a Gerber Ripstop I and it has not given any reason to complain. I just prefer USA made knives. This is purely personal preference.

The model I am looking at is the 5785. It is USA made with the 154cm blade. There is also 5780 which is NOT listed as USA made nor does it list the blade steel. But, I am glad to know I am not going crazy.

If you like a knife, then get it.
My Gerber Remix Tanto has better f&f than my CQC7.

If that is your reason then I would suggest "never say never". I have seen lots of CRKT designs that I like. I've bought a few CRKT knives and I can't find anything wrong with them. I don't know about the others, although I've owned Gerbers in the past there aren't any that I want right now. But you never know, there might be new designs or new direction by any of them that could change your mind in the future.

If you like it, try it. I had sworn off CRKT until the Ripple. You know the old saying "Even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut" well it's the same with knife makers.

After a lot of research, I am weakening. The model # is not listed as being made in the USA on Gerber's website, but I believe the model I am looking at (#05785 for those interested) is still made in the USA. Plus, most pictures are stock photos and don't have the blade markings making this even harder. There is a chance that I may be near the SMKW this weekend and if so, I will look at the Covert there. I will admit that this has been a hard knife to research. Mostly because the info is so old.

Edit to add: I want to thank ya'll for the good advice.

I had pass through me recently a Gerber Combat S30V USA it was smooth opening and solid lockup but just something about made me feel it just wouldn't hold up well, I was kinda thinking about the $15 specials at Big-5 (smith wesson is one that comes to mind right away). Just that it might become rickety (pivot issues especially) after some use. I can say for sure because I didn't hang onto it.
my two cents
best!

Nothing wrong with CRKT, and Camillus makes a few knives that I wouldn't mind owning. If you like the AF, then get it.

This higher end CRKT, already has lock movement, from just flipping it a very moderate amount..

I say dont do it, Gerber sucks and you know it. I used to like them and had a couple of their knives, I got rid of them all at a loss and will NEVER buy another Gerber.

Gerber is not a brand for a knife enthusiast. It's a brand for your average Walmart/Academy shopper who would rather spend their money on beer than knives (nothing wrong with that). I'm sure they can make a "decent" knife, but for the same (or less) money, you can get a top shelf kershaw, or a lower end ZT that will be EXCELLENT.

Don't waste over $100 bucks on a Gerber

Save yourself the time and just take the money and give it away. You'll feel better and won't have a POS gerber to get rid of. I don't think a good knife has to be expensive, but I have given gerber enough chances. They always disappoint.
