Going with the caly 3? I want a zdp blade that is not too bulky, I have never owned a spyderco but I am excited due to all the talk about them. My question is does anyone know of any other options with the zdp blade? And I worry about the 420j being too soft, does anyone know why the blade is constructed like this?any input would be appreciated!!

The Caly3 is a fine choice. Very nice craftsmanship on that knife, almost on par with a custom in terms of quality. The cutting edge is ZDP, not the 420J2, so you have nothing to worry about. When the blades are laminated, the hardness is enough that you won't roll the 420 steel up like a pair of pants.

Not sure why it's made that way, but there are thousands of those knives in use in the world and nothing but good things being reported by users.

love my caly 3... the san mai blade is gorgeous albeit the 420 layers scratches easy around the pivot. very attractive edc/dress knife.

I think it's one of the best "value" Spyderco knives. My CF version feels and looks great, and opens verrrryyy smoothly. I have a G10 version that is the same. They are great knives, especially if you like the choil.

The Caly 3 ZDP/CF is a fantastic knife. It's a bit broad, like any Spyderco, but it's thin, so it carries well. It's a smallish knife, but because it's made with a finger choil, it'll fit just about anybody's hand (unless you're Andre the Giant). The deep carry wire pocket clip is very discrete, and the carbon fiber is just plain sexy.

The other option is the Delica. You can find it in both sabre grind and full flat grind (which I'd recommend over the sabre), although the handle colors will be different. However, it won't be as comfortable (YMMV) to hold, and having plastic handles, it's not as attractive (again, YMMV). It'll be lighter than the Caly 3, and will have a solid ZDP blade.

Probaby the same reason as KAI's composite blades but a good few years ago - and the difference from today is the thinner stock instead of smaller footprint stock - saving costs for the high end cutting edge steel by volume control- but you already knew that :)
