Hi
Am I nuts to pay $130 on a Howling Rat if the retail was $80 originally? I need something great for general backpacking/outings use that is lightweight and very dependable. I hear this knife is amazing, but am hesitant to pay so much.
Is this a good survival knife; is it heavy or lightweight; how does it compare to others like the Fallknivens survival stuff. Thanks, I definitely rely on the advice of this forum here. Cheers!

130 is a good price, I have seen quite a few sell for 150+. It is ideal for backpacking and EDC. Great score!

If I were to sell mine today, I'd take no less than $130. Not because its getting that much but because I'd be hard pressed to find a comperable knife that I like as much as the Howler. Its the most versatile outdoor knife I've ever owned.

Once you own and use a HR, you'll realize that the knife was underpriced. Because it has become somewhat of a sellers market, you can always sell it for what you paid for it.

HTH,

Chris

Not to be nit picky, but they were 89.95, not 80. Then whoever bought it through SRKW paid 14.95 for shipping. So, the person you got it from had about $105 into it before he opened it up. And now they're discontinued, so I'd thank him for not charging you $150+ like everyone seems to be doing. I just saw one end in an auction last week for $164, and another for $157 to put it into perspective. You got a good deal, IMHO.

Here's a pretty objective review of the Howling Rat: http://www.cutleryscience.com/reviews/howling_rat.html

There are others if you look around, but these guys review a lot of different manufacturers, and are pretty objective. Scroll down and check out the picture of the 210 lb. guy hanging from one that they stuck 1 inch into the wall. Read through what they did to that poor thing before they were able to cause a critical failure. It's a pretty kick-ass blade as you'll soon come to agree.

If I were to lose one of my howlers, I'd have no problem paying $130 for another one. Even a used one that's in good shape.

In fact, I'm looking forward to paying that much (with shipping) for a new version. :D

I like the new knives in their chopper sizes but the HR with the Res -C is just too close to perfect. I don't know that the new version will do it for me.

Guess I'll have to wait for the Scrap Yard to get its paws on some SR101 (or INFI)
