Am I on the right track?

Hopefully this is the right place to post this. I'm looking at getting a new sharpener. I prefer to buy once cry once. The full setup is a Hapstone R2, venev centaur stone set, couple kangaroo strop plates with stroppy stuff (1 and 4 micron), stoppers, micro adjustment thing, angle tool, and the clamp on light. Does this sound like a good solid setup? Majority is gonna be hunting knives, of course all our kitchen stuff, probably be doing some for the guys at work too. Thank is advance guys!

That would be an excellent setup! The clamp-on light is optional; I don’t use mine much.
That's one thing I got back and forth on quite a bit. Seems like a good idea, but I don't see anybody using it in the research I've done either...

There is a lot in there I have never tried, but I have lurked here long enough to know that setup ought to get it done!

I have a Hapstone, and it's great.

I don't use it much any more; the point of it was to give me a constant reference for what sharp is, as I learned to sharpen on stones, which I have now done. I still use it sometimes, or I use the K03, to reset a bevel to a known angle.

I absolutely understand wanting a guided sharpener, and being daunted by learning to sharpen on stones. It does take a while to get good at it, or at least it took me quite a while to get good at it, consistently. And the guided sharpener edges are great.

But I would question the need for guided sharpener strops. Stropping on full sized strops is really easy to learn. It doesn't take much of any time at all for it to be easier and quicker than trying to strop on the guided system.

I wondered about that as well. I guess it's just a consistency thing since I would already have the system. Learning on stones would be the ultimate goal someday, but I like the speed and accuracy with the guides. Could just be cause I suck at stones though too 😂

Been reading up more on the venev centuars. It's sounds like they are a great stone, but it looks like they can be a little finicky with the hapstone stone holders. Have they addressed that and it's not an issue or is it something I should be considering a little more? The other option I was looking at was hapstone start cbn.

Hand sharpening is a dying art.
Have you tried to learn it?
It takes some perseverance and muscle memory but is a good thing to know and pass on to others.
I tried some of the early guided sharpeners.
Went back to what has worked for me for 65+ years.
I know I'm a damned old boomer but ok with it.(:
Sorry for hijacking your thread.

Honestly, I think your proposed setup is overkill.

All of my sharpening is done with a King 1000/6000 water stone and a strop.

I have an Edge Pro (similar to the Hapstone) that I haven't used in probably 15+ years.

Dang I just wanted to know if those stones would work in the holder. Guess I'm in the wrong place 😂

Ask a question here and you will get a number of answers.
Most all friendly and some well informed.
Don't be put off if they're not exactly what you're looking for.
We were all FNG's here at some time
I recommend doing some searches here on your questions, listening a lot and taking advantage of the accumulated knowledge on BF.

It did seem like that question went off track! I have lots of different stones for the Hapstone. Although they are a bit small, I usually use diamond stones for the KME. I am pretty sure the ones you mentioned will work fine.
