I got to play with one at the oregon knife show earlier this month and I was really disapointed. It felt like one of the 10 dollar taiwanese cheapos with aluminum handles. There was alot of handle slop on the one I played with and the blade was just way too thin for my tastes. Am I the only one that thinks this way?? I had been looking forward to getting one of these ever since I heard rumors about it almost a year ago. Now that I have played with one though I am very disapointed.

Considering most of us haven't touched one yet, we can't place any judgements.

Well, you couldn't have really played with it at all because they had the info tags on them.

To be honest, I didn't really appreciate the 42 until I got mine and had a chance to really "go off" on it. The light weight does make it feel cheap in the beginning, but once it gets flying you can feel how really solid it is.

It took me about 30 minutes to get used to it, but after that, I couldn't put it down.

Yeah I figured it would be one you have to play with for a while to appreciate. I'll Probably still buy a couple of them anyway. It just did not live up to my expectations. My biggest disapointment was the slop in the handles. My daily carry is a Compass Industries Chi-No-Shi 1200 That has been abused for about 2 years and it has less handle slop than the 42. Lockup on my C.I. is not so good though. I imagine the benchmade will fare alot better in this area.

On the BM forum, them said adjusting the torx screws for tension adjustment on the blade was ok, and did not void the warannty (they were refering to a folder, but said as long as you onlu loosend and tightened, not disassebled, everything was fine). Could the problem you felt have been addressed with a bit and wrench? Just wondering...

My 42s are tight and have no slop...

I agree with Clay... super smooth...

Hey, well at least you can still run with the best of them right?

I will forgive you as soon as you tell me that you have flipped them. Dudes, if the 42 can make Lew FLIP a balisong it must be REAL good.

As I said in my review article, the handles on mine are perfectly balanced between lateral slop and rotational bind. I also mentioned, I think, that the weight of the handles does, initially, give the thing a bit of a "cheap" feel.

I once took a factory tour of a major defense aircraft manufacturer. As we were standing and talking, a little woman came along and picked up a very large beam that had been sitting on stands in front of us. She just grabbed it, picked it up, and walked off with it. This piece is a major structural member of a multi-million dollar high-performance fighter plane, it was was about ten to fifteen feet long, and maybe six or eight inches in cross-section, and she picked it up like it was nothing. I'm sure that, to her, it felt cheap. I can assure you, though, that that beam was neither cheap in quality, strength, or price.

In this day and age of advanced materials, like Ti alloys, weight is not an accurate indicator or quality. Clay's exercise of the product over the coming months will be the real teller.
