In nearly every BM vs... thread, it is stated that Benchmades edges are very obtuse and don't cut well because of this. I've owned many Benchmades, and many Spydercos, and I've not had either that didn't cut well. I noticed today that my BM710D2 did cut better than my Endura at work. Both had touched up factory edges and were super sharp, comparison was made cutting cardboard, plastic (1/16 sheet and film), pnumatic hose, etc. I measured the thickness of the edges just behind the sharpened bevel on a few BMs and Spydercos, and found interesting results:
Spyderco Endura: .033"
Benchmade 710D2: .022"
Spyderco Manix: .026"
Benchmade Vex: .023"
These thickness are averages taken at four points along the blade where the grind meets the primary edge. Spyderco may sharpen there knives at a slightly smaller angle, but it appears that Benchmades edges are thinner behind the bevel. I have always been pleased with the results of BMs, and have had great luck with their bevels being even and clean (I've had to send back two Spydercos). This post is by no means a slam against Spyderco (the Manix is my favorite working knife, I find it to be brilliantly put together), I just believe that BM deserves a lot more credit for there knives being cutting insturments, and not only pretty pocket jewelery.
