What would you do?

A) Keep it and use the crap out of it
B) Send it back and demand a refund
C) Re-haft with a 20" octagonal from house handle

The package arrived at my house in a flat box with no protection. The box was open on one end with handle hanging out. The circle wedge split the handle and is continuing to split further. The head is not seated completely onto the handle (not even very close by my standards).

I'd send it back, it's one thing if you wanted to re-haft (I think that's what it's called) it anyway, but that's really shoddy. You should be able to use it out of the box.

Yes, they did stamp it.

Glad im not the only one that would be upset. I own a 11$ Collins hatchet from ace hardware, if judging by appearance, it is of much better quality.

I have contacted the seller through amazon. I will keep yall posted about how they handle the situation. I don't want to bad mouth a business before they have an opportunity to correct an error.

Looks pretty rough. Here's the one I bought a couple years ago. Still nice and tight. Amazon is great on returns at least. They'll send a replacement right away and have you ship that one back within 30 days I believe. I would request a replacement.

Yours looks similar to mine, I may have not been so disappointed if it had arrived in a proper package...my first impression may be having a dramatic impact.

Send this pics to the seller, see what they say. Can't hurt to express your disappointment in the care they failed to give to a product you paid them for. If they do nothing, give them a bad rating.

May I ask how much you paid for it?

I paid 46$ shipped. Ive had my eye on these for 2 years now. This one was actually a birthday gift for my mother. She recently purchased some unimproved acreage on Lake Richland Chambers. I'm sure she would never even notice the quality control issues.

That's some damn sad packing right there. My wife gets stuff off amazon all the time and I receive the occasional box from ebay and I've never seen such a lazy packing job.

That handle does look pretty bad, personally I would return it but I guess that might bring you more problems (shipping, waiting etc). I would use it for a while and then in the meantime buy a new handle (either a generic one or order a new one from a local Husqvarna dealer), so that you have it spare in case the original breaks or something.

I was interested in buying a Husqvarna hatchet a couple of years ago but I heard they were experiencing quality control issues so I opted instead to pay a bit more and buy a Gransfors Bruks small forext axe. I also bought a Fiskars X7 hatchet to use as a "beater". I'm very happy with both.

The grain orientation is bang on and don't forget it's merely a hatchet. Likely as not you couldn't over stress or break it in a lifetime anyway. If it does become loose this becomes a whole other matter; can't do much with that circular wedge in the way. But then all their stuff is like that.
Enjoy it! Very few hatchets ever suffer from overuse.

I should grab a picture of the grain orientation from the bottom, I haven't seen a more straight line on any axe. I wish there was a way to get that damn circle wedge out and re-hang this thing on this handle. any ideas?

Jedslack...The componentry looks ok, just very roughly put together. I don't like those metal wedges. I don't know why anyone would use wedges that split the wood.

regards...Franl

well, the seller was very good and offered me a replacement. however, I can not leave well enough alone...I took the husqy to the garage and went to work. I was able to get the head seated almost a full inch further onto the handle. of course that circle wedge had split the wooden wedge into 3 pieces, so I drove them in separately with a large punch (seated approx. 1/2" deeper) everything was looking beautifully (super tight with little-to-no gaps). I went to drive that crummy circle wedge and it put up a fight...I don't have a vise. after trying to drive the wedge while holding the axe with my hand (no luck), I sat the handle onto the concrete floor and attempted to seat the circle wedge with a punch and hammer. once seated, I noticed that the handle had split at the point of contact with the concrete. the split is cross-grain. I think it will hold up for a while, so im gonna just beat the hell out of it until I get to put a new handle into it.

am not an expert on the matter but it looks less than stellar. more important: is it safe to use as it is?
