Am I using my blade correctly?

Not sure where to post this. Whittling question. Using a fixed blade knife, 4.5" blade. When I whittle with it I use the part of the blade closest to the handle because I feel that where I have the most control. I ask because there are several knives I like but they have the serrated edge next to the handle. One, I'm not sure what I'd use the serrated edge for, but second, I lose that part of the blade that to me I have the most control over. Thanks.

Big cuts, use the belly/end of the blade. Fine work, high control, use the portion closest to your handle. You are doing things properly.

You're doing it right. That's one of the reasons many people prefer plain edge blades over serrrated ones.

I guess if I were going to whittle with a knife that big, that's the part of the blade I'd be using. I do most of my whittling with a folder blade 1" to 1 1/2" long. Much easier to control.

My favorite whittler is my BRKT Micro Slither...it's perfect for me.

that is a pretty big blade to whittle with. Like somebody else said, usually blades that are actually designed for whittling will be a lot smaller than that. Most of my whittling is done with either a Carnvin' Jack (awesome for whittling by the way) or a Queen Whittler, which I also usually EDC.

Also, blades made with a partially serrated portion are not made for whittling. It'd be foolish to even bother.

I remember years ago whittling with a buck fixed blade knife or anything I happened to
have at the time. Worked ok and got the job done mostly on branches and firewood.
Now I just picked up a Ross Oar Carver folding knife which is really quite nice to use.
