Good Day to all,

I am trying to figure out why i havent gotten ANY response on an ad in the for sale forums. i ran it 6 mths ago and again now and i'm just wondering if i'm why off base price wise! also if anyone could tell me more about this knife i'd REALLY appercaite it : how many were made? how old are they? etc etc that kind of info. i might just hold onto to it and give it to my daughter when she's older

whatever you tell me WONT change my selling price. i'd just like to learn more about this classic looking folder! BTW the bolsters are not that tarnshed looking it's just the pic they DO SHINE

thank you

Looks like a Schrade Geo. Wostenholmeson Sheffield England model M40
made between 1981-82. 4 1/2" came with a sheath and retailed at $79.95.
Ebay prices < 50.00.

Beautiful knife
Hope that helps some.

Schrade acquired IXL around 1976 . IXL is an english company which used to be George Wostenholm Sheffield England. For 4 years ( if memory serves ) they owned this company and made some of the nicest knives they ever produced. The marriage ended due to many reasons. However the line of these knives which were produced included a limited nuymber of patterns your knife was sold by itself and in a nice set of IXL's sold in a wood case. Most of these knives ( for some reason are usually mint when you find them. Perhapes people just put them away because they were so nice ) ) They do not bring a lot of money however I believe the day will come when they will. This will not help you right now. I do not know the number of these produced. The trend for these to increase in price seems to have started already a set in the wood case just brought about twice what it would have sold for about 2 weeks ago.

The interesting thing about these knives and the union of Schrade with IXL was that aside from production costs ( which were a major factor ) the english attitude played a large part in it not working. The american bosses came in to the plant for the first time and expected the usual reverence and usual labor problems which you would normaly greet a new managment. In stead since it was lunch time they ( the workers) were kicking a soccer ball around the plant and keeping score, the new bosses were asked to move over since they were on the playing field. I love the English I remember watching them embark for the Falklins ( Ah Spelling? ) islands. I had gone to the dock to watch the ceremony I remember a very large raw boned Sgt Major leading them on to the ships he yelled ALL RIGHT BOYS and they started singing don't cry for me Argentina. I still get goose bumps. Yes the English have a wonderfully independent attitude make great knives the strangest sense of humor in the world and certainly did not blend in with the american concept of a factory worker.

Irv gave the statisics sorry if my long winded ramblings drifted to the mundane. I have always maintained that without the stories of the blood and sweat that went into this company its knives would have had no more soul than the Jap or chinese or some third world countrys knives which will probably be being made on the same machinery ( just a guess ). By the way if that is the situation the good part is that they like to use surgical steel it is clean precise and sterile perfect for removing someones heart cleanly. LT

LT,
Your absolutly right. Without the stories they are just beautiful knives. I dont have the history and stories behind these knives and can only hope you will keep regailing us with them. Love to hear more about the Faulklin story too.
What were you doing there?
I didnt think anyone in the US was involved.

Thanks
Larry

Mainly staying drunk. As I said I like the Brits and I like the Isles. I do not care much for countrys where people smile at you take your money and as they do so, call you a son of a bitch ( in a language they do not know you understand ) while spiting in your drink ( usually that would be wine ). I also enjoy the nature of the irish as well as the tactiturn wit and deameaner of the scots. The Welsh take it for drama. Just my opinion but I enjoy the old ethics and nature of the people. ( It has a feeling of having been that way forever like a 5000 year old man stepping out of a bog and ordering a pint. Yeachh that dosen't form to good of a mental image.) And as most things in this world this is also changing. In the eightys I went to Dublin just to watch Army play Boston college american football. They played at Lansdown stadium ( the first and possibly last time american college football was played in Europe ). Army was drubbed Boston had some kid called I think Flukey Flutey in any event I could be wrong on that, I do not follow football but I believe he went on to be pretty fair at the game. I hope I have the right guy whoever it was, he beat the tar out of ARMY. Gambling was or I guess is legal on these things and I took a drubbing. I got a bit ( as they say pissed ) picked a fight in Donnybrook square ( which is where the term donnybrook comes from and I always wanted to do) ( another drubbing from what I can recall ) fell asleep in the steam room with a bottle of orange and vodka. I had to be rescued. They had a room (not the steam room another room) like in a John Wayne movie all leather furniture a fire place and a bunch of well dressed english gentlemen reading the London times ( or whatever ). I was lead past them with my Vodka in my hand wearing only my terry cloth robe. Needless to say even these staid folk stopped reading to look at the ugly american. I stopped raised my bottle and in my best John Ford said God bless all who dwell within they started reading again firmly convinced that there belief that all americans are crazy was indeed true. I went to bed. That was a great trip I was in a pub when an old man tried to pick my pocket one night I stopped him and the bartender came running out and pleaded for me not to call the police. Since the old man was not quite right. I told him I wouldn't call the police if I was bleeding to death. I then gave the old fellow a small donation. I became quite a favorite that night after that and never paid for another pint. I cemented my position after a few more pints and a few shots of tullamore dew by yelling out Up the rebels down the Brits. Well I was a lot younger and being drunk it seemed like the thing to do.

By the way the flight over, was filled with Boston business men they were in the back section with me. They actually drank the plane dry there was not a drink left when we landed at Shannon they lit for the pub to get the hair of the dog like people looking for a restroom. As I said I was in the back of the plane Edward Kennedy was in first class finding that out made me a bit nervous ( the Kennedys even then were not great with planes ) . True to form he held up the flight leaving Ireland for an hour by being late. When his higness arrived we were allowed to board. One of the business men had a jewish wig with Pais ( the long braids and a black hat on as a joke ). I found it incredibly funny however again I was drunk. One of my friends knew the Lord Mayor so I got to meet him. It was a great trip. I do not believe I will go into some of the other trips right now suffice it to say I like to holiday there.. I have a friend in Australia he lives 2 hours from the nearest town ( by road ) on a beautiful inlet ( or bay ) 20 minutes by boat. He does not seem to worry about food much says he can always " get a good feed of fish". He does get tired of his own brew and goes to town for something called TOOEYS ( a brand of beer ) which I have tried to get here. Now that I am alone I may take him up on his offer to visit.

Now that being said perhapes it will teach you not to invoke the perenial bull from a rambling old man who has nothing to do in the late hours being the only human in a large house when he cannot sleep and thinks to damn much. Hurray for party Poker on line. LT

Nice to have you back aboard, LT. Even if just for one story. Even if this ship is sinking, we've always got enough grog for a good story.

Interesting, too bad you didn´t go to a ping pong match, they do play some fine table tennis over there. I don´t know why something reminded me of John Wayne in The Quiet Man, there was no football there, just boxing and a horse race.

Thanks for the story.

From the popular song "El Querreque", aguardiente (burning water, or maybe more like firewater) is a common inexpensive drink with high alcohol content:

"Del whisky y el aguardiente,
Cual es el mejor licor ?

Cual es el mejor licor,
Del whisky y el aguardiente ?

Yo digo que el aguardiente,
porque es emborrachador,
emborracha al presidente,
tambien al gobernador."

Which means something like:

"Between whisky and aguardiente,
Which is the best liquor ?

Which is the best liquor,
Between whisky and aguardiente ?

I say it´s aguardiente,
for it´s good to get you drunk,
It makes the president drunk
and also the governor."

Then again the song writer probably never tried Irish potato whisky.

I believe that judgment has finally ruled I am not receiving notices that replies are being posted, even though I do request instant email. I feel as though I like Schrade are quietly being faded out. I unlike Schrade will not go quietly in to the night. I have started two locations filled with artifacts from local knife companys and mainly Schrade items. I will probably lose my shirt luckily I was told as a child to always have 2 sets clothes so that you could be buried in a clean set. If anyone has an interest in seeing a great group of artifacts let me know or just go about 100 yards past Hyde park where FDR lived and look for the Hyde Park Antique center . On rt 9 North of Poughkeepsie NY. I have been battling for a museum for these artifacts for years. This is the beginning I will not go away as long as I can still make a point. I presently have the original sign from 1903 which hung in the NYK office. 3 feet wide quite a story how it was made. Hanging there. Artifacts unbelievable Unique Schrade protos. And here is the good part you do not have to buy a thing in fact this is being done just to piss off those who feel that no one gives a ( do not know computer jargon in english ) **** is the word. The spot Has only a small sampling and its purpose aside from costing me a few hundred a month is to show. These items This is the premier antique dealer center in the Mid hudson area Folks like Paul Newman, and Robert Deniro pass by so if any one cares at all it is as close to a museum as I can start with. I have another location across the Hudson In Highland NY Vintage Village in which I have placed a few dozen antique knives. Once again the reason for this is so that people with an interest in these pieces of history may have a focal point. The actual amount of items and there history is quite possibly unique. Once again the object of this exercise, is not to lose this history, and to remember the people who created it and not let it pass unnoticed. Could some one tell these people to send me a notice when some one responds so I do not seem impolite . Thankyou remember the war is only over when no one is still fighting. LT

LT, It looks like you can subscribe to any thread to be notified when there is a post, especially those you start, by clicking on "Thread Tools" at the start of the thread, and then clicking "Subscribe to this thread". It doesn't look like you can subscribe to a forum in general. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, or have misinterpreted what LT is asking about.
Sooo..... We hope you will just check in on "Uncle Henry's Lost Souls" as often as possible, and keep the stories coming. If I ever make it back East, I'd look forward to seeing the displays, hopefully with some forumites.

No one here would think you to be impolite. Quite the contrary.

Take care.

Bill
