hi everyone:)

im thincking about buying my second khuk, my first was a
ganga ram special 22" and 2,6 lbs its a little to big to cary around
so now i want one a little smaler:)
would the Amar Singh Thapa Knife 18-20" be a good choice?
im going to use it for some chopping and macheteing:p
wouldent it be a bit easier to cary aroud?
im using my knives pretty hard, and this one is waranted for field use:)
how is the astk vs the m-43? enny one have both?
is the astk enny heavier than 2 lbs?

thanks for all the ansvers i have got from you on my provius threads:)

Halvor

No idea about the ASTK, but the M-43 does great for light brush clearing. The spine's pretty thick on mine but tapers to a very thin (relative to other HI products) shearing edge.

I absolutely love my 18" ASTK (and just gave my second one to my dad -- he refuses to take it off his person now). i think its damn-near perfect, BUT im waiting on my m43 to arrive to compare the two.

The ASTKs are built insanely tough, and to that end they tend to be beefier at the spine than M43s. Their structure offers nigh indestructabiliy but at the expense of agility a bit. You can clear brush, certainly, but it would get tiring. and in my opinion, HI khuks shouldnt be used for brush clearing anyway. Their shape and overall build is for chopping. I even have a Condor Khukuri whose blade stock is thin enough for machete work, but performs less effectively at clearing brush than a tradtionally shaped machete.

good to hear you are so happy with your astk:)
im pretty sure i will go for one:)
do you know how mutch i weights?

ASTK is the Khuk I go for when the chopping is too much for my Tamang..

I love the blade because it also has a nice point which is handy for digging out roots.

good good good:)
seams everyone is very happy with it:)
to baad i will have to wait for the new shipment to arive:)
then i will order one of those kami found sheats too. they looks great.

Mr.Singh i know is an 18" tall, 36Oz , utility-minded and a VERY good friend in NEED.

Yes, he dons a paracord ponytail so he doesn't offend anyone should he takes a few wild swings.:D

nice knife you have there:) its realy cool with a line yard hole and a paracord, do you find it usefull? easier to lunch harder blows without worrying about slipping?:)
actualy the lineyard hole is one of the main reasons i want a astk, maybe the costumers would like it on some of the other models also? im shore i would:) what does you guys think?

The lanyard hole on the ASTK is very well made; Rolled copper punched into the hole (with least influence to the shrinkage of the wood scales)

Because of the sheer weight and length of ASTK, the paracord serves as a good safety measure.

Slipping? i can still wear a glove.
Flying? I'm not good at cleaning up heads

ASTK has a very wicked spine and super sharp point.
It is still my No.1 Utility knife.

You should ask those hikers passing by. They could barely speak when they saw the swinging knife. Amazing knife from HI!

I requested a lanyard hold, just like the ASTK hole, on my special order M43;). Hopefully the Kamis will include it. I told Auntie I suspected it would be a popular feature once I posted pics and a review. I should receive my M43 in October and will post the stats and pics ASAP when it arrives. It's a feature that could come in handy, as in loss-proofing, and has no downside, as far as I'm concerned. I had Dave Clements build a 4" Ruger Redhawk for me and had him include a lanyard loop. It adds a lot of class IMHO, and I can use all the extra class I can muster! When my M43 arrives, we'll see how it looks, but I suspect I will be very pleased.

I developed a bad habit for having the paracord wrapped around my wrist.
It gives me the mindset that the grip is secured and go ahead and WHACK.

Sure love to see your M-43....one of the most coveted khuks in 2010.

According to Auntie, my lanyard hole M43 should arrive in October. I can't wait either. I ordered in August. I think the ASTK would sell very well now. It is one of many models I'd like to see return (the archives are a dangerous place:)). That's why this thread caught my eye. The ASTK seems so business like, really bullet proof.

The ASTK seems so business like, really bullet proof.

There's a steady group of ASTK fans here.
M-43 will chop better than it, but ASTK never let anyone down.

I've gone through many bitter experiences with him so i appreciate it a lot more!

Like Auntie always said:

Have fun with the brave knife!:)

My go-to knife was my 18" Murali-made ASTK but i gave it to my dad and he loves it. Now it's my 18" Dil-made ASTK, which i was thinking about selling but will instead hold on to as it's become my only ASTK.

The ASTK reminds me of a Gelbu Special on steroids. It has a similar slender profile but is angled forward more with an incredible chiruwa handle, not to mention it's super-thick spine.

I also have a special order 20" M43 coming in soon, so i'd like to compare the two. Can't wait!

I'm willing to change my mind, but I think a lanyard on a blade as big as these is asking for trouble -- at least if it's used while chopping.

If you lose your grip while swinging, it stands a VERY good chance of hitting you as it flails around -- really bad juju. I'd rather have it fling off to elsewhere, and have a bright colored lanyard or fob on it to help me find it. Now if you're using a lanyard while slicing -- say, cleaning fish on a boat, and you're using it to keep it from falling in the water, I can see it.

A lanyard used the way Jay uses it isn't a problem, it is just there to add grip. Now it it were to become a loop around one's wrist, then this would indeed cause a problem. If you lost grip with one actually attached to your body by a loop of paracord or whatever, then it would become an out of control, swirling blade of death and destruction likely to cost someone a lot of blood. I like to use the ponytail grip deal myself now and then though I have shied away from my traditional fighter's loop on a khukuri.
