This weekend I finally got a chance to test out my ESEE-6 (after having it for roughly 2 months :P, I've been really busy :\). So I decided that I would try my hand at a few bushcrafty type things, I will warn all of you... don't expect much I have almost no experience in this type of thing :o I only have what videos tell me and people describe to me to go on.

I didn't find many dead trees in my backyard, but I found this one which was an okay size, but I wanted it to be a bit bigger... Oh well *obligatory knife-in-tree-before-shot*

So I started choppin' away at it, man I've never chopped down a tree with a knife before, but I didn't think it did too bad of a job for apparently not being a chopper.

Here it is after a little while:

Success :D

It was a pretty tall tree, so it came down with quite the thunder ^.^, It felt quite fulfilling, and ended up breaking into three equal size pieces. So, I needed to break it down even further, and I didn't really want to chop through it again haha.

So I figured I'd be a little inventive (sorry for the bad picture):

I didn't have enough strength to break it like that though :o, so blunt force worked pretty well to break it to a workable piece :P :

Next up, I tried my hand at some batoning, and yes, I wanted to look like a fool so I used the huge piece as the baton :p :

That worked really well, the ESEE-6 sliced through it like it was nothing, I was really impressed :D.

Here is where it starts to get embarrassing however, here is my fail attempt at a fuzzstick :o :
IMG_0177.jpg

Hehe, I guess I have some work to do on that, it definitely looks at lot easier than it actually is when I see it done on videos and stuff.

So, I tried to get a fire started using the shavings from the fuzzsticks I was trying to make, so I grabbed a ball o' lint:

I ended up getting a little flame going for a while, but it didn't last for very long, apparently the wood I cut was a bit wet :(.

So I tried my hand at making a spoon:

But, my knife decided that it wasn't really into making spoons on that day :\ :

Good for you for getting out and trying something new. Just keep up the good work and keep trying to learn new things. And everybody makes awkward fuzzy sticks and things there first time around. Keep on practicing and don't be afraid to ask questions, there are a lot of real experts that hang out around here, and they are all more then happy to share their knowledge.

Overall, it was a pretty fun experience, this knife is really I awesome, I really love it :). Although, upon further inspection I found that I had a few chips in the blade :(, I guess I must have done it upon batoning or chopping, i'm not sure. You guys probably wont be able to see it because my cameras crappy, but here is my attempt at showing ya:

edit: had to put this on a different page

Hey thanks man, positive feedback is always welcome ^.^. I plan to keep going out there and trying to improve my skills as much as I can, if I get stumped on something though, i'm glad I have somewhere where I can come and ask questions :D

That's great your getting out and putting what you've learned to use. All the knowledge in the world will do you no good if you have no idea how to apply it in the real world. Keep at it and in no time you'll be far more proficient at your survival skills!

Looks like you had a great time. That's what it's all about, going out and doing stuff. And the cut ain't too bad

I've discovered that you want make sure you have some distance between yourself and the subject of your camera if you want to make it focus. It is better to make some distance and zoom in to get the camera to focus. I offer this tidbit as I used to be very frustrated over all my blurry pics.

Thanks for sharing, it was a fun read!

You know, that distance between subject and camera thing will probably work with every camera but mine haha. Mine is really old, and really temperamental, so thats why a lot of the photos up are blurry :\. I will try to do what you say though, I think I just need a new camera though ;).

Agreed for sure! +1 :D

I must say, if you play with knives your bound to get cut....

I've injured my finger really bad last march with a knife, try to where gloves when applicable, regardless..

Have fun, stay safe and do it the easy way and learn through experience not trial and error...

Welcome to the forums too:

Yeah, it was my own fault I cut myself(to be more precise, stabbed) haha.... I was being stupid while I was digging out the bowl of the spoon. Oh well, live and learn :D

Ahh. now you show why I have a esee6. Quite the *Unreal little knives huh* Thanks for shareing your pics. And don't worry I take Really bad pics, (my camera is so old it uses 3 1/2 in floppy disks for the digi stuff) And its so true how we ALL live and learn. Life would not be much fun with out both. Living is a gift, learning is a bonus of the gift of living. So Enjoy edgy

You're never too old to learn new skills. I am not really one of the "Make a spoon" bushcrafty guys, either. What in the wild requires a spoon to eat? My fuzz sticks suck too. But I can make a fire. So don't feel bad. Practice. The ESEE 3 is easier to use for making fuzz sticks. But chopping down trees with knives...I have mastered that task. Get a Junglas or machete for that. Keep it up. You'll be a guru on the W&SS forum one day.

If you, or anyone else, ever need some hardwood trees to hack down...lemme know. I think there are more in the fence than a guy could cut down in a lifetime.

Practice makes perfect....
Fuzz sticks ,I am not perfect by no means but just a tip ..looks as if your cutting to deep into the wood.
I just shave off slivers and put it around my tinder bundle and work my fire from there...
good work... try to see if your camera has a macro setting to get the fuzzies out of close up shots...
on the nicks ,easily sharpened out.... maybe twisted alittle while batoning or chopping and hit a knot ?
again easily can be sharpened out
